Overview The Music Director plays a pivotal role in shaping the musical vision and direction of our Parish. This position requires a dynamic individual with a passion for music and the ability to lead, educate, and inspire musicians of all skill levels. The Music Director will be responsible for overseeing rehearsals, conducting performances, and mentoring musicians to foster their growth and development. It is not required that this employee be an active, participating Catholic. Physical Demands Work up to 25 hours a week and as necessary at events. Able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Able to hold arms out (directing/conducting) for long periods of time. Able to lift up to 25 pounds (office materials etc.) using proper techniques. Able to walk up and down stairs. Mental Demands Possess the ability to provide clear directions. Must possess leadership qualities, being open to others’ ideas. Ability to perform in front of large groups. Possess the ability to follow direction and work without supervision. Exhibit promptness and dependability. Possess ability to maintain a sense of order. Able to work collaboratively with other team members. Able to develop rapport with all liturgy participants. Responsibilities Help create a productive environment where there is harmony, good morale, consistent communication and cooperative teamwork. Be committed to advancing the goal of whole community catechesis through a well-planned and celebrated liturgy and the parish’s growth in faith through music. Read and reflect on weekly and seasonal scriptures that the Word might be heard through the musical selections and that the music chosen to fit the liturgical action and season. Maintain music budget. Participation in Staff Meetings (minimum of once per month). Music Review new music options before each liturgical season. Organize, file, and document which music we have on hand. Consult online or print resources for music suggestions. Consult files for possible octavos. Order/download new music if needed. Masses Setup music equipment before each Mass. Clean up music area after Mass. Choir/Accompanist/Musicians Management Plan music for all weekend Masses, Holy days, Holidays, Penance service, Lenten Retreat/Parish Mission. Schedule musicians/cantors/instrumentalists as necessary. Arrange for substitute musicians in the event of absences. Recruit, schedule, train, rehearse, and direct choir. Prepare the schedule 6-8 weeks in advance. Conduct weekly rehearsals & Masses. Pass out schedules and music that is not in the hymnal and put in slots. Study music and make musical decisions such as phrasing and breath marks. Submit timecards for accompanist and musicians. Equipment Arrange for tuning of piano and organ assuring they are in proper working order. Maintain order in music area regarding microphones, music stands, books etc. Maintain instrument and sound system. Check water in humidifier and add water if needed. Holidays/Holy Days Secure musicians and singer for each Holy Day Mass. For Christmas and Easter (Christ the King, Pentecost, etc.) secure extra musicians. Copy and send out music to accompanist and singers. Schedule 2-3 rehearsals prior to the holiday. Attend and conduct choir at holidays/holy day Masses. Worship Aids as Needed Download songs from OneLicense or copy/scan and place them in a Word document with proper titles etc. Send to office manager and have them work their magic in Publisher. Reporting/Records Bi-monthly log onto OneLicense and report each piece of music that we have used in printed worship aids for funerals and for our seasonal weekend worship aids. Maintain and update files for choral and instrumental music keeping a listing of usable repertoire. Maintain copyright licensing. Report usage to OneLicense every 3 months. Training and Continuing Education Attend Archdiocese workshops and seminars as schedule and budget allow. Completion of all required Archdiocese training.
