A lot about you
We are seeking a skilled, experienced product manager to lead efforts to analyze and categorize news articles to improve recommendation relevance and engagement. In this role, you will drive the development of story and content understanding to improve recommendation and ranking models for Yahoo news. You will work closely with journalists and engineers to define requirements for how we surface relevant content to users to help them understand the world around them and achieve their goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Location Preference: New York City or EST time zone
- Develop and execute a content recommendation product strategy that enhances the Yahoo News recommendations experience through the thoughtful application of machine learning and LLMs.
- Partner with data scientists, engineers and journalists to design, test, and refine ranking models.
- Develop strategies for extracting meaningful features from news content.
- Partner with Engineering on NLP and topic modeling.
- Design taxonomy and metadata schemas for news categorization.
- Collaborate with the Editorial team on content tagging workflows.
- Develop strategies for measuring and optimizing content diversity in recommendations.
- Balance personalization with diversity and editorial priorities in ranking.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, and data science, to ensure alignment with overall product goals and timelines.
- Provide clear communication and documentation to keep stakeholders informed about product developments and algorithmic enhancements.
- Analyze ranking performance and conduct A/B tests.
- Implement quality assurance processes to monitor and evaluate algorithmic outputs, proactively identifying and addressing any issues related to content accuracy, bias, quality or misinformation.
- Develop product vision for personalized notifications.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of product management experience that includes 2+ years of ML product management experience.
- Strong technical background, ideally in machine learning or recommendation systems.
- You are comfortable tackling complex, technically ambiguous problems and understand how to translate ideas into requirements across stakeholders.
- Experience with A/B testing and experimentation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Quantitative skills for digging into the data to drive insights combined with excellent product sense to deliver scalable, consistent value to users in alignment with business goals.
- Strong entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for identifying and driving the development of new data-led opportunities that add value to users and contribute to business growth.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including executives, editors, and technical teams.
- Experience working with engineering teams and a deep understanding of machine learning and LLMs.
