Do you thrive in fast-paced, creative, and collaborative environments?The Communications and Public Relations Specialist is responsible for enhancing the public image of USL Spokane by managing media relationships, overseeing press communications, and supporting the club's community and public relations initiatives to build and maintain a positive reputation.This role will oversee all internal and external writers.

The Communications and Public Relations Specialist must be able to work regular shifts during the week and on the weekends during home games.This position requires flexible hours, extended days, and evenings.This position must be located in Spokane and is an in-person role.

Prior experience in professional writing either through higher education courses or through professional work experience required.Prior experience with public speaking and strong presentation skills.

Key or Essential Functions

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the duties listed below.The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

Media Relations:
•Act as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
•Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, broadcasters, and media outlets.Build strong, mutually respectfully relationships with local, regional and national media.
•Maintain current media contacts and lists, regularly update media lists and stay apprised of new contacts for which relationships need to be developed.
•Manage tools for sending press releases and tracking media exposure.
•Regularly track media exposure and share with the USL Spokane team.
•Assess negative media exposure, analyze outcomes, strategize course correction, and collaborate with team to ensure prevention in the future.
•Send press releases and announcements.
•Draft and pitch stories to the media.
•Organize and manage press conferences, media days, and interviews for players, coaches, and other staff.
•Ensure consistent messaging across all media interactions.

Content Creation:
•Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and newsletters, or oversee the staff and/or contract writers ensuring quality of final product before distribution.
•Collaborate with marketing and social media teams to produce content, including articles, blog posts, videos, and other media assets.
•Oversee and manage a team of interns and contract writers, providing direction, assignment of work, feedback and mentorship.Oversee all written content and proof all final content prior to distribution.

Player Appearances:
•Support the Director of Sporting Community Engagement in coordinating player appearances for community events, sponsorship activations, and media engagements.
•Provide players with detailed briefings and support to ensure successful representation at events.

Game Day
•This position must be able to work flexible hours which may include extended days, nights, weekends, holidays.This position must be able to work game days at One Spokane Stadium.
•Game day responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs but may include:
•Serve as the point of contact for media and press during home games.
•Support press box responsibilities, ensuring all media representatives have necessary credentials and resources.
•Coordinate post-match press conferences, including player and coach availability for interviews.

Minimum Qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, communications, public relations, public relations or related field.
•Minimum of 1 year experience in communication, public relations, marketing, journalism, or other related field, ideally in the sports, entertainment or media sectors.
•A combination or accumulation of applicable work-related experience and/or education may be recognized as sufficiently meeting the requirements based upon educational programs and specific experience.
•Ability to pass comprehensive background check including a motor vehicle report.
•Possess and maintain a current and valid driver's license and maintain legally required insurance
•Ability to pass SafeSport training

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Non-Exempt position with a range of $20 - $25 / hour
  • Eligible for annual discretionary bonus
  • 2 weeks paid vacation annually (prorated the first year of employment).
  • Paid sick leave 1 hour for every 40 hours worked
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance provided with a 75% employer contribution for employee premiums
  • 50% employer contribution for dependent/spouse medical, dental, and vision
  • Employer paid employee life insurance and AD&D
