General Description
Under general supervision, the Court Reporter performs a variety of court reporting duties for the assigned court. The duties involve furnishing a statement of facts of court proceedings to requesting parties and compiling court records by taking a verbatim record of court proceedings in phonetic shorthand using a stenotype machine, maintaining the records for future use. Provides equipment used in performing duties, including stenographic machine, computers and printers, along with necessary reference material.
Examples of Work Performed
Attends all court sessions and makes full record of evidence, objections, rulings, voir dire and arguments when requested by Judge or any party to a case, together with all objections to admissibility of evidence, rulings and remarks of Court.
Makes full record of jury arguments and voir dire examinations when requested by attorney for any party to a case, together with all objections to such arguments, rulings and remarks of Court.
Documents and files all exhibits with various Clerk of Courts; preserves all notes for future reference and for the required length of time and prepares accurate transcript, as instructed, of court proceedings for appeals or future court use.
Prepares official transcripts of all evidence or other proceedings, or any portion thereof, subject to laws of the State, the rules and instructions of presiding Judge of the Court.
May conduct deposition of witnesses, receive, execute and return commissions, and make a certificate of proceedings in any county that is included in the judicial district of the court; may prepare jury charges in civil cases; may perform administrative or secretarial services which assist in administrative functions of the Court.
Regular attendance.
Employee may be assigned other duties in addition to those listed and duties may change according to changing needs of department.
Education and Experience
Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED).
One (1) year of experience in general office work or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Successful completion of a court reporting education program, including supervised internship.
Two (2) years of related reporting experience in a court room setting, preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration:
Current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license from the Supreme Court of the State of Texas.
Must have proof of a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.
Must be able to be insured by County insurance carrier.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of court reporting principles, methods, equipment, and practices.
Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.
Knowledge of basic Word processing and personal computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and various other software programs.
Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Knowledge of telephone etiquette and public relations.
Skill in performing court reporting duties such as preparing verbatim transcriptions of court proceedings.
Skill in operating specialized court reporting equipment and software.
Skill in providing information and assistance to office staff, visitors, callers, and other County departments.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, outside agencies, and the public.
Bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages.
