Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.
Manhattan Graphics Center supports the learning and practice of fine art printmaking by providing an affordable, inclusive, professional studio and exhibition space, where a community of printmakers at all stages of artistic development can create and present their work. To encourage greater appreciation of printmaking, we offer public programs, including: classes in traditional and experimental techniques; fellowships; artist talks; and outreach to public school students; as well as exhibitions including member, curated and exchange shows. This year the Manhattan Graphics Center studio relocated to Brooklyn and has assumed the name MGC Community Print Studio at Powerhouse Arts facilities on the 5th floor. We are hiring for key staff roles as we prepare to open to the public early next year.
MGC is seeking a Print Studio Technician to join our team. Reporting to the Director of MGC Community Print Studio, the MGC Community Print Studio Technician will participate in all aspects of community studio operations, which includes membership and member relations, classes, artist talks, scholarships/fellowships, exhibitions, outreach, and fabrication. The MGC Community Print Studio Technician plays a crucial role in the studio's daily operations, maintenance, and member communications.
Areas of responsibilities include:
Community Print Studio
Create a safe and accessible work environment for members and provide them with assistance and service with:
Studio orientation for new members.
Distribution of materials.
Helping with various printmaking processes.
Providing technical assistance.
Monitoring and educating members in health and safety best practices and proper use of equipment.
Processing material purchases and credit card transactions.
All issues as they relate to membership and studio use including editioning.
Assist in creating and maintaining accessible, accurate, user-friendly signage and instructions for various processes and equipment.
Assist teaching faculty in facilitating workshops in classrooms and studio.
Assist in mixing chemicals while maintaining safe storage and disposal practices.
Assist in maintaining equipment and furniture.
Collaboratively clean the studio daily.
Complete clerical and administrative tasks as needed, attend staff meetings and participate in all staff training sessions.
Follow material tracking protocols.
Trains and direct the work of studio monitors.
Execute opening and/or closing checklist depending on work schedule.
Participate in executing print fabrication projects as needed.
Research and develop innovative fabrication techniques.
Collaborate with other staff, shops, and departments on projects as needed.
Participate in Powerhouse Arts events and shop tours.

Qualifications:

2+ years of experience, or the equivalent of, in printmaking studio technical operations
Proficient in all areas of printmaking, including silkscreen, lithography, intaglio/etching, relief printing, as well as platemaking and digital separation techniques
Willingness to work within a community studio setting with a desire to share knowledge and serve a robust community of artists
Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, with the ability to problem-solve
Ability to prioritize shifting needs of a busy studio
Knowledge of best practices in health and safety, must be able to work safely in an environment containing hazardous chemicals, and repeat various motions with the wrists, hands and fingers
Basic understanding of press operation and maintenance
Basic understanding of studio maintenance and ability to troubleshoot and identify potential upgrades
Experience working with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Wix, Constant Contact and G Suite
Maintains a commitment to ongoing professional learning
This role involves physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking while performing studio demonstrations and experiments.
Hours + Compensation:
Full-time and part-time position available. This position is for a shift schedule 8hrs/day for 5 days/week or 6hrs/day for 4 days/week. Due to the nature of the role, flexibility to work on evenings and weekends is required. All print studio technicians must be open and willing to swap or cover shifts occasionally. The pay range is $25-$27 an hour based on experience and expertise. Benefits include health insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, a CitiBike membership, and TransitChek. Benefits are prorated and eligibility is based on hours worked per week.
