Position Overview
The Technical Director (TD) is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of event production, including staging, lighting, audio, video, LED walls, and electrical systems. The TD ensures the seamless integration of technical elements into creative visions, collaborating closely with designers, project managers, and operations staff. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical expertise, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a passion for delivering high-quality productions that reflect our commitment to excellence and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Oversight
- Lead the planning, design, and execution of all technical elements for events and productions, ensuring alignment with creative and logistical requirements.
- Supervise the setup, operation, and breakdown of staging, lighting, AV, LED walls, and generator systems.
- Maintain high standards of technical quality, safety, and reliability across all productions.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor technical staff, including lighting technicians, audio engineers, stagehands, and AV specialists.
- Develop and enforce workflows, timelines, and best practices for technical teams.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to integrate technical solutions with design and operational goals.
Equipment Management
- Oversee the maintenance, inventory, and repair of all technical equipment, including lighting rigs, sound systems, LED walls, and generators.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and upgrades to enhance our technical capabilities.
- Ensure all equipment meets safety standards and is prepared for deployment on-site.
Project and Client Collaboration
- Collaborate with Show Producers, Project Managers, and clients to understand technical requirements and deliver tailored solutions.
- Attend planning meetings and site inspections to assess technical needs and feasibility.
- Provide on-site leadership during events, troubleshooting and resolving technical challenges in real-time.
Budget and Resource Management
- Develop and manage budgets for technical components of events, ensuring cost-effective solutions without compromising quality.
- Allocate resources, including personnel and equipment, to meet project timelines and goals.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all technical operations adhere to industry safety standards and protocols.
- Train staff on safety procedures and best practices for working with technical systems.
- Maintain accurate documentation of safety certifications and compliance reports.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Event Production, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in technical production or a similar leadership role in the live events or entertainment industry.
- Strong expertise in lighting, audio, video, staging, and electrical systems.
- Proficiency with technical tools and software, including CAD programs, lighting consoles (e.g., ETC, MA), and AV systems.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in rigging, electrical systems, or AV technology is a plus.
- Experience working with custom fabrication and integration of technical systems into creative designs.
- Familiarity with Hawai‘i’s cultural and creative industries is highly desirable.
