The Technical Writer position is responsible for writing, editing and organizing technical documentation.  This person must have excellent research skills, must be able to organize ideas, and be able to translate technical terms into text any reader can understand. Provides support in the preparation and/or maintenance of systems documentation, procedures and methods, and maintenance of documentation library as required.  Will provide documentation support services and contribute to the knowledge and understanding of proofreading including grammar and spelling.  Provides support during the preparation and finalization of technical documentation, including specifications and user manuals and their appropriate formatting.

Essential Duties & Job Functions:

  • Provide support in the creation of coherent hardware and software product discovery reports for using multiple sources, tools and formats. The technical writer supports the project manager and data analyst and system administration team members in preparing multiple technical documents, procedure and process guides, forms, reporting template document development and revisions, briefing slides, point papers, and reports.  This position will require knowledge of and/or experience with SharePoint Library, SharePoint Data Export, Power BI Report and Illustration creation.
  • Participate in periodic, sometimes frequent, teleconferences or meetings to provide the Government status on progress and accomplishments on tasks, schedule, and other issues. The use of and the ability to utilize the USMC Teams provided software to host and support meetings is required.
  • Provide administrative support at meetings, conferences, and briefings, as required by the Government. This position will provide support in preparing, updating, and maintaining briefings, graphic arts, audio-visuals, demonstrations, and related support materials. This support will be provided for diverse and multiple types including: Technical Interchange meetings, status or staff coordination meetings; program briefings to staff and other program related organizations and conferences, as required by the Government.
  •  Prepare and submit agendas and minutes of meetings and conferences.
  • Responsible for the preparation, review, revision, and maintenance of technical documents including software and systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation.
  • Write and edit technical documentation for all system hardware and software to include installation, configuration, and how-to documentation.
  • Create and revise flowcharts to document existing business processes, systems, and data workflows
  • Provide editorial, formatting, and proofreading assistance to produce system internal and external documents under strict deadlines
  • Confer with government representatives, vendors, other contractors, or team members to establish technical specifications and to determine the subject material to be developed for publication.
  • Complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Develop and maintain installation, configuration, how-to documentation, and online help for both customers and employees.
  • Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers or company personnel.
  • Review published materials and recommended revisions or changes in scope, format, content, methods of reproduction, and binding.
  • Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate the material.
  • Manage multiple assignments simultaneously, while working independently and with other writers.
  • As an integral part of cross-functional product teams, this person must learn through hands-on experience.
  • Study drawings, specifications, and mockups to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence.
  • Interview production and engineering personnel and read other material to become familiar with product technologies and production methods.
  • Observe production, developmental, and experimental activities to determine operating procedure and detail.
  • Arrange for typing, duplication, and distribution of material.
  • Assist in laying out material for publication.
  • Review manufacturer and, trade catalogs, drawings, and other data relative to operation, maintenance, and service of equipment.
  • Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Mandatory:

  • Must be a US citizen
  • High School Diploma and the completion of studies from a technical institution
  • Three (3) years of experience in technical writing
  • Experience showing good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat applications
  • Must have valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Must be able to provide driving record upon request
