Position Summary

The technical writer is responsible for creating documentation communicating safe operation of all machines in the GAS product line. This primary objective is achieved through investigation of safe operation methods, preventative maintenance activities, set up, debug, and operation activities with engineers, service technicians, programmers, and knowledgeable operators. This information must be organized and documented in an efficient and effective way, resulting in a professional set of customer documentation. At times, documentation must be modified to meet specific customer format and/or content requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized
  • Able to follow department style guide and conventions
  • Gather information from Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and internal databases, write technical documentation, and edit for accuracy and content
  • Organize and clearly state all details pertaining to machine operation, including safety, installation, setup, controls, program management, part production, fault monitoring and maintenance
  • Document installation, setup and operation of machine subassemblies, including guarding, pneumatics, tray transfer, end of arm tooling, and secondary operations
  • Take photographs and video of machines and components for use in documentation and the machine as shipped as a subassembly archive
  • Print and assemble Installation Instructions, Operating Instructions, Job Aids, and other documents as needed
  • Maintain proficiency with writing application versions and embrace new trends in technology used to produce documentation
  • Utilize effective time management with the ability to multitask and complete assignments according to priority and due dates
  • Communicate effectively (verbally and using various electronic formats) to provide project status and technical information to various audiences
  • Act as single contact point for customer documentation sending files via ShareFile server and maintaining Document Checklist status
  • Maintain Engineering Standards Guide
  • Update legacy and existing product documentation as required
  • Create in-house work instructions
  • Support Proposal/Project Managers, Purchasing, Engineering, and Marketing as needed

Computer Skills
  • Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with illustration and photo-editing software for cropping, combining images, and adding callouts and leader lines
  • Familiar with Adobe Products (Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Able to download and manage files
  • Basic knowledge of business systems software (i.e. SAP)
  • Basic Intranet Skills (for researching internal content databases, timesheet/attendance)

Job-Specific Skills, Knowledge, Training, or Experience
  • Proficient creating large, multi-chapter documents in MS Word (experience with templates, styles, etc.)
  • Familiar with Adobe Products (Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Experience photographing/videoing mechanical equipment using a digital camera
  • Able to create PowerPoint presentations
  • Experience writing operation manuals, installation instructions, and job aids, etc. focusing on software applications and complex electrical/mechanical systems such as machine tools and automation
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks/projects concurrently
  • Must be able to work productively within a multifunctional team environment
  • Able to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Able to manage time while multitasking

Travel
  • Minimal travel, possibly to customer sites

Education
  • Bachelor's degree (English, Technical Writing, or related discipline)
  • Minimum (2) years of relevant professional technical writing experience, preferred in mechanical/electrical field with automation focus a plus.
