The CBS News Washington Bureau is seeking a creative and hardworking Coordinating Producer with strong national security and foreign affairs expertise! Candidates should have reporting contacts and editorial judgment, field and segment production experience, and excellent broadcast script writing skills to collaborate with Washington, DC based correspondents and coordinate national security coverage across all network platforms.
This Coordinating Producer will coordinate editorial coverage with the Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, working with WH National Security Council, State, Intelligence and Defense beats along with the London Bureau to ensure communication across all CBS News platforms. They will pitch and develop National security news and feature stories for day of air and future planning for all broadcasts. This producer will assist in story production from concept to broadcast as needed, while collaborating with the Executive and Senior Producers, the broadcast platforms including streaming and dot com. They will also work closely with the Managing Editor to ensure sharing of reporting in the DC Bureau and across platforms.
Candidates must have the ability to make quick and smart decisions, report out and crash stories under deadlines, and work with the broadcast teams to produce visually compelling news segments. Candidates must also be adaptable with changing schedules to work around breaking news.
Skills/Experience
8+ years of editorial experience working in journalism is preferred.
- Experience in a broadcast news environment.
- Firm command of the US national security apparatus and agencies as well as foreign embassies in the U.S. This is not a foreign correspondent field producer role. This is a US based role focusing on US foreign policy and national security decision making that includes tracking US allies and adversaries. Knowledge of military system also useful.
- Must have proven news judgment and experience chasing breaking news.
- Proficiency in the broadcast newsgathering process with journalism experience is preferred. Ability to collaborate with a correspondent is required as is the ability to write for the visual medium of broadcast by selecting strong pictures.
- Must be able to balance and prioritize multiple stories with different deadlines: short, medium, and long-term.
- Collaborate with producing, correspondents, assignment desk and crews for news gathering in Washington and overseas.
- Attend press conferences, stakeouts, and events. Set up interviews with officials for all platforms of CBS News.
- Keep a futures calendar for upcoming foreign affairs/national security events. Coordinate Pentagon, Intelligence, State Department and WH National Security teams on relevant subject matter.
- Gather video and sound bites for use across all platforms of CBS News. When necessary, researching archival video material for use in news stories.
- Duties may require some early mornings, late night and occasional weekends depending on the breaking news schedule.
- Must be a phenomenal teammate with a positive outlook. Thrives in fast paced and time-critical situations.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with unrestricted ability to drive a car.
- Must have a U.S. passport with unrestricted ability to travel domestically and internationally.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $140,000.00 - 170,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
