Scientific Grant Writer and Program Manager

The Byers Eye Institute in the Department of Ophthalmology, at Stanford University School of Medicine, is a top-tier, internationally recognized, multidisciplinary center combining world-class resources with a commitment to providing the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic care to our patients. Our faculty and staff provide excellence in ocular and vision healthcare to patients, while our cutting-edge team of researchers carry out innovative laboratory research and clinical trials.

The department is currently seeking an experienced and professional Grant Writer (Academic Program Professional 2) to collaborate with our faculty and research administration team to manage the proposal preparation on industry grants, contracts, program projects, and federal grants, both routine and complex. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience with successful complex grant proposal preparation, enjoy interacting and working with many different people and teams, be able to follow through in a fast-paced environment, adapt well to changing priorities, anticipate and plan for tight deadlines, employ critical thinking in daily tasks, and be a self-starter.

Duties include:

  1. Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
  2. Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
  3. Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  4. Teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Develop curriculum. Develop curriculum-rating survey, detailed feedback on courses and make recommendations for preliminary overview and changes.
  5. Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
  6. Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
  7. May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients.
  8. Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
  9. Coach and mentor program staff.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with NIH grant writing.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  1. Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  2. Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  3. Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  4. Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  1. Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  2. Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  3. Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  4. Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  2. May travel locally.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $77,000 to $139,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
