We are recruiting a reporter to work on live news coverage for our website (BBC.com/news) and app, based in our Washington DC bureau.

Main responsibilities

You will be part of a team reporting and writing daily, breaking news live blogs on the biggest stories in North America, from US politics and high-profile criminal trials to mega-storms and the Met Gala.

Our live reporting pages use text, pictures, videos and streams to provide fast, immersive and insightful coverage. You will work under two senior live blog editors based in the US but collaborate closely with Live team colleagues in London on the biggest global stories. You will be a self-starter who loves the thrill of breaking news, can write fast and engaging copy and is excited to experiment with the tone, pace and format of live coverage. You will also be expected to write standalone news stories when required.

Our North American digital operation covers US and Canadian news for domestic and global audiences. It is staffed 7 days a week. In this role, you will be expected to work both early and late shifts, including some weekends, and will be based in our Washington DC office.

Are you the right candidate?
•A proven ability to jump on major breaking news stories and turn out quick, accurate copy based on a range of sources including the BBC's own reporting
•An awareness of the distinctive nature of live coverage and an interest in developing new formats and creative approaches
•Experience of live news blogging or a proven aptitude for dynamic, mobile-first reporting formats
•An understanding of how to write in an accessible and clear way for a North American and global readership
•A track record of covering the national or international news agenda, and generating daily coverage ideas and angles
•The knowledge and flexibility to cover a broad range of stories, while meeting the BBC's standards for accuracy and impartiality
•Ability to cope with pressure, communicate clearly, juggle multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom
•Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve storytelling and broaden audience reach

Salary: $70,000 - $85,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Location: Office Base is Washington DC, USA

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).
