Overview
This position is for the Dr C P Garcia Public Library.
The Library Assistant is the frontline for library service and is required to deliver excellent customer service and have strong interpersonal skills. Under the supervision of the managing Librarian, they will perform a variety of Library related tasks such as assist patrons at the public service desk, demonstrate information literacy, process library materials, copy cataloging, assist with computer related tasks and new technologies, interlibrary loan requests and processes, assist with programs, and create marketing material for distribution. This job exists to provide Corpus Christi residents with library services and resources. Evenings and weekends are required.
Responsibilities
• Provides continuous assistance to library patrons at the public service desk.
• Must be able to communicate effectively and apply satisfactory customer service skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Encourage patrons to comply with established policies. Must be able to understand and explain policies and procedures in a firm and tactful manner.
• As first point of contact must be able to resolve patron complaints related to fines or fees.
• Maintaining confidentiality is essential when inputting and reviewing patron records in Integrated Library System (ILS).
• Must be able to use ILS system to evaluate patron records and clear patron records correctly when collecting payments, to balance in ILS system and checking materials in and out.
• Must have ability to handle money transactions accurately, using cash register or credit card system.
• Requires knowledge of library resources (print and electronic) and reader's advisory when assisting and instructing patrons.
• Must have knowledge of electronic devices and apps used by library resources.
• Assist patrons with copiers, digital microfilm reader\scanners and other equipment common to the library environment.
• Promote library programs and resources to patrons.
• Explain and perform intra and interlibrary loan procedures, document delivery, resource sharing, reserves and other information retrieval options.
• Processes interlibrary loan request to submit to La Retama ILL department, using resources provided by Texas State Library.
• Completes processing functions not performed at La Retama.
• All locations, under supervision of Managing Librarian perform collection maintenance activities: pulling and withdrawing selected items from ILS.
• Develop and maintain database of donated material to add to collection.
• Sorts and distributes mail, performs minor book repairs, re-assigns materials upon request, prepares newspapers and serials for public area.
• Encodes material during RFID tagging process.
• Performs all tasks related to opening and closing procedures.
• Completes daily deposit, monthly reports and reconciles library funds.
• Completes monthly reports, gathers, and submits statistical data as required for administration.
• When assigned as team leader, under supervision of Managing Librarian prepares desk schedules, trains staff on daily operations including use of Integrated Library System, copy cataloging and tasks common to a library environment.
• Trains and oversees volunteers.
• Assists with preparing and delivery of library programs such as craft and book clubs.
• Acting as backup to Managing Librarian or Youth Services Librarian delivers programs, during their absence.
• Responsible for securing the building at closing by making sure all doors have been locked and setting alarm system.
• Ability to keep up with continuously changing technology related to library environment.
• Troubleshoot computer\technology related questions when assisting patrons.
• Must be familiar with a variety of electronic devices and apps used by library resources.
• Must maintain knowledge of content offered in library electronic resources including databases provided by Texas State Library as well as how these resources are accessed. All content to social media pages. Those maintaining event page on library website should have knowledge of web editing software.
• Assists or presents technology classes offered to the public: basic computer skills, online resources, electronic devices.
• Promotes library programs to the community in coordination with marketing efforts, creating and designing promotional material using assigned software.
• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
• Non-Exempt - Full-Time
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement.
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Minimum Qualifications
• Associate's degree (AA/AS) or two (2) year technical certificate
• Two (2) years of experience
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
