Job Description
Under general supervision, operates all equipment necessary for the broadcast of all programs listed on the daily program log; makes all necessary entries on the operations log; updates station website with program information and audio; and performs related duties as required.
The Radio Announcer-Operator is responsible for broadcasting prescribed non-commercial, educational programs for Radio Station KALW. Positions in this class are not responsible for technical maintenance work.
Job duties:
- Monitors air to ensure quality broadcast and compliance with FCC regulations.
- Upholds FCC regulations.
- Updates listeners with information, including any of the following: news (can include sourcing, gathering, writing, and rewriting information from news sources, including KALW partners and other news websites); weather; current program content (can include sourcing, gathering, writing, and rewriting information for program rundowns (like Fifth & Mission and content associated with that half-hour broadcast); future program content, such as day sheets; and other information as directed by supervisor.
- Writing, voicing, and sound engineering on-air promos for KALW.
- Creating web posts for KALW.org.
- Creating and posting content for KALW social media platforms.
- Sound engineering aired programs on KALW for posting online.
- Sound engineering content for inclusion in KALW on-air programs (like On the Arts).
- Uploading content to ENCO (or other programs) for sharing content.
- Updating program logs.
- Using a range of KALW equipment to play audio on the air (as directed by supervisor).
- Backtiming programs to fit within parameters of broadcast clock.
- Maintaining a clean and healthy workspace.
- Ensuring equipment works properly.
- Making minor repairs as necessary (as directed by supervisor).
- Notifying supervisor about needed major repairs.
- Must remain physically present at sound board for at least 55 minutes per hour during shift (unless otherwise directed by supervisor).
- Must not engage in personal business or activities during shifts (with the exception of emergency personal issues like family emergencies).
- Conducts timing and flow of radio programming by following and updating the daily program log accurately.
- Ensures consistent sound quality both in studio and remote for live and pre- recorded broadcasts by monitoring audio levels and troubleshooting issues such as, but not limited to: overmodulation, sound interference, technical glitches, and system issues.
- Makes verbal announcements and hosts on-air segments using scripts or improvising.
- Transfers, uploads, and downloads audio files; may be asked to update station website and social media with program information, content descriptions, photos, and audio.
- Composes and edits scripts and other written materials for optimal readability and listenability.
- Takes and logs transmitter readings for the operations log as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including but not limited to emergency alert systems.
- Sets up playlists and promos within radio automation software.
- Records and edits in-studio audio and syndicated programs and promos.
- Reviews KALW online audio content to ensure quality and makes audio edits as
and if necessary. - Performs preparation, including research and assembly of content, for on air
segments, streaming, and web presentations. - Sets up audio equipment for radio producers, hosts, and guests.
- Performs other related duties.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires completion of high school, GED, or equivalent.
Nine-months of verifiable experience in announcing or voice work for a radio station,
podcast, video media or similar; OR
Nine-months of verifiable experience in audio-production (such as podcast host, sound
engineer); OR
Nine-months of verifiable experience in in video, audio or online broadcast or podcast
operations; OR
Nine-months of any combination of the above experience.
Substitution:
Nine-month internship in audio journalism may substitute for the above experience on a month-
for-month basis.

Selection Procedures:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Behavioral Competency Questionnaire: (Weight 100%)
Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written exam designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to:

Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
