At Digital Harbor Foundation, the Director of Creative & Design fills an essential role in leading and elevating our nonprofit’s creative strategy and visual storytelling. This role combines creative vision with hands-on design leadership, ensuring that all creative assets—across digital, print, and multimedia platforms—are aligned with our mission and brand values. As the Director of Creative & Design, you will oversee the development of compelling campaigns, marketing materials, organizational branding, and visual storytelling content that engage funders, projects, prospective projects, staff, and stakeholders while increasing the visibility and impact of the organization’s work.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Visual Communications, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience).
- 7+ years of experience in creative direction, design leadership, or a similar role, with demonstrated success in both creative strategy and design execution.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating experience with a wide range of creative projects, including digital, print, and multimedia campaigns.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, etc.) and familiarity with multimedia tools (video editing, motion graphics, etc.).
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and creative strategies to both creative and non-creative stakeholders, and collaborate with others.
- Experience with digital marketing, social media strategy, and user experience (UX) design is a plus.
- Video editing and post-production skills are preferred.
- Strong asset management and organization skills.
Additional Notes
Remote. This position is remote with the potential for a few in-office meetings in the Baltimore, MD office each year.
Role and Responsibilities
Creative Strategy & Brand Development
- Develop and execute a comprehensive creative strategy that amplifies our mission, vision, and brand identity across all communication channels.
- Serve as the creative steward of our brand, ensuring all visual and messaging elements are cohesive, compelling, and reflective of our core values.
- Develop and maintain brand identity guidelines, ensuring consistency across all design materials.
- Lead the conceptualization and design of impactful marketing campaigns, fundraising materials, donor communications, and public awareness initiatives.
- Collaborate with leadership, development, and program teams to align creative efforts with organizational goals, particularly in the areas of fundraising, advocacy, and public engagement.
Design Leadership & Visual Storytelling
- Oversee the design and production of all creative materials, including annual reports, brochures, social media assets, websites, videos, and event collateral.
- Ensure all creative content (both visual and written) reflects high standards of quality, is mission-driven, and is targeted to engage key audiences, including donors, partners, and the public.
- Ensure design projects are managed from concept to execution, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, while maintaining brand fidelity and meeting deadlines.
Multimedia & Digital Content Creation
- Lead the development of multimedia content (e.g., video storytelling, infographics, interactive content) to support fundraising campaigns, program awareness, and stakeholder engagement.
- Collaborate with project teams to create visually compelling digital assets, including website design, social media content, email newsletters, and online advertising campaigns.
- Champion new and innovative ways to leverage digital storytelling to engage audiences and drive impact.
Annual Report & Publications
- Lead the design, development, and production of our annual report, collaborating with leadership, development, and project teams to ensure the content reflects the organization’s achievements, financial accountability, and future vision.
- Manage the production of other publications and reports that support programmatic work, advocacy efforts, and donor stewardship.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Work
- Collaborate with the Impact Studio and project teams to develop creative materials that support fundraising events, donor engagement, and project promotion.
- Work closely with leadership to translate complex programmatic work into easily understandable, visually appealing content that resonates with a broad audience.
- Partner with external vendors (photographers, videographers, printers) to ensure high-quality production of creative assets.
General
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Keep abreast of industry trends, design best practices, and emerging technologies to ensure designs are modern and relevant.
- Review designs for errors, consistency, and adherence to brand guidelines before final production.
- Support with organization communications as assigned.

Compensation
Compensation for this full-time position is $80,000 - $95,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
