Server on Film Sets Job at CRAFTY CUISINES INC. in Greater Toronto Area
CRAFTY CUISINES INC., Greater Toronto Area, ON, CA
Job Description
Congratulations. You have stumbled upon one of the best opportunities in the service industry. Which also serves as a great starting point into the elusive, lucrative and exclusive world of film and commercial television production.
Our company provides what is known in the film industry as “craft service” (google this). Our specialty is working on commercials. These commercials range from local Canadian businesses to multinational corporations, banks, tech companies etc. Filming takes place predominantly in the GTA; downtown Toronto, Scarborough, the beaches, Etobicoke, Mississauga, North York. Occasionally we will work in York Region, Hamilton,Peel,Niagara. There are shoots that may require us to stay over night, it is rare, and production will pay for accommodations when needed. You must arrange your own transportation to and from the job site. More often than not, the location will not be disclosed to you until the night before the “shoot day”. Successful applicants will be booked as far out as 2-3 weeks, however sometimes the number of people on the job will increase with very little notice given to the company, and we may check in to see if you’re available. So again, it is nearly impossible to know where the job will take place at the time that you accept the booking, so transportation or willingness to take Ubers etc is key.
We provide our craft service via our craft trucks. These resemble food trucks however they have been retrofitted to suit our needs. The other difference between traditional service jobs and this is that there is no exchange of money that takes place on site. There is nothing to sell.
Here are some fun ways this job differs from a typical serving job! The hours: I would say 75% of the time, you will have to be on site for 7am and the location will be within 30 min of the downtown core. However! Do not be surprised if you have a call time for 5:30am. It’s not often, but the moment you forget that it’s a possibility, it pops up! I personally love it, because it means that most likely I will be home early too. Which brings me to my next point; when does the day end? Your day will either end 10 working hours after you start, or when you hear the 1st Assistant Director yell “thank you that’s a wrap everyone!”. And yes, there is a schedule. But the schedule is a lie! Not entirely a lie, but it’s a plan that we try to follow. You may have a 7am call time, 7pm schedule wrap and end up actually wrapping at 9:30 or something.
Overtime is paid at time and a half after 10 hours, double time is paid after 14. Your day rate is based off a 10 hour day.
Other perks: we shut down from Dec 23-Jan 2nd so no need to book time off for New Years. Also we don’t work on statutory holidays, more often then not we have the day before and after the stat holiday off too. Uniforms are provided. Training is paid. Boss is cool.
We are seeking energetic individuals with positive attitudes, strong work ethic and interpersonal skills. Initially you will be handing out snacks and drinks from our service window, but over time your responsibilities will grow. Eventuality you will have to speak with U.S clients, celebrities, athletes etc; take their food and beverage orders and make sure they have what they need. You may also become the main point of contact to the production manager and producer(s) on set, as you grow and gain more experience.
We can go over a typical day and what your responsibilities are once you have been selected and have moved to the next step of the hiring process.
I look forward to receiving your application and I wish you the best of luck!
