The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) invites applications for a research and instruction librarian. Research and Instruction librarians are key members of the Research, Instruction and Clinical Information Services team. They provide a broad-range of research and scholarly support and instruction services to faculty, staff and students in the schools of the health sciences and the graduate medical education programs at UPMC. Librarians work closely with the University's health sciences community to connect research and information needs with library resources and services.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Liaison Services and includes liaison responsibilities to the School of Public Health, which ranks #16 among the top public health schools in the nation. Pitt's schools of the health sciences consistently rank among the best in the country, making this an exceptional place to work and collaborate.
Specific responsibilities include:
Collaboration and Outreach:
* Serve as the primary liaison to the School of Public Health, building relationships with faculty, research groups, and administrative units to assess and support their research, teaching, and information needs
* Maintain awareness of community engagement, interprofessional education, and other public health initiatives within the school, connecting participants with relevant library resources and expertise
* Participate in school committees and initiatives related to research, teaching, and library services
* Collaborate with public health faculty and administrators to assess instructional and research needs, embedding library resources and services into courses, assignments, and research projects
Instruction:
* Develop and deliver tailored instruction to support research and evidence-based practice within the School of Public Health, including new student and faculty orientations
* Develop and deliver engaging, library instruction sessions and materials appealing to a broad range of health sciences audiences
* Stay current with trends in health sciences education, curricular structures, and pedagogical methods to ensure instruction is aligned with innovative instructional delivery
Research Support:
* Develop and maintain expertise in library databases, search interfaces, and other resources to effectively support research
* Develop and refine complex search strategies and offer guidance on citation management
* Design and conduct complex, advanced literature searches to support systematic reviews, clinical guidelines, and other multifaceted research projects; liaison librarians are recognized as a member of the project team, contributing to the search methodology section of the manuscript and receiving authorship for their professional contributions
* Collaborate with the library's data and publishing team to increase faculty, students, and staff awareness of scholarly communication topics such as ORCiD, open access, open educational resources, scholarly identity, and research impact
Scholarly Contributions:
* Cultivate partnerships with public health, library, and university staff on projects such as grants, research papers, poster presentations, and other creative initiatives
* Share expertise and research findings with broader academic and professional communities through publication in refereed journals, poster sessions, or presentations at professional meetings
Professional Development and Service:
* Monitor trends in public health research and education to identify emerging resources, tools, and technologies that may enhance the library's offerings
* Stay informed of trends in health sciences librarianship and participate in relevant continuing education opportunities
* Serve on internal and external committees and participate in relevant regional and national library and public health professional organizations
Required qualifications
* Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution, MPH, or a relevant combination of a Master's degree and research, academic library, or public health experience
* Experience using research databases or conducting searches for biomedical literature
* Demonstrated experience in providing instruction or delivering presentations to adult learners
* Commitment to inclusivity, valuing diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and perspectives in research, teaching, and service
* Proven ability to work collaboratively and independently with diverse groups
* Demonstrated flexibility and initiative in responding effectively to changing needs and priorities
* Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects to timely completion
* Proven commitment to delivering excellent customer service
* Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to actively listen, understand, and articulate user needs
* Evidence of skills in fostering new connections and building professional relationships
Preferred qualifications
* Experience in a public health setting or completion of coursework in core public health topics such as behavioral health sciences, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, or health services administration
* Experience in an academic or health sciences library
* Familiarity with tools and technologies relevant to public health research
* Experience with systematic reviews or other complex research projects
* Proficiency in the use of assessment methods
* Proficiency in educational technology or instructional design
Work Environment
* This position is for a full-time faculty, appointment-stream librarian.
* Appointment will be at the rank of Librarian I, II or III, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary range: $60,000-$87,000.
