SUMMARY

Employees in this class perform various routine, repetitive tasks with minimal supervision. Assists the Children's Librarian, the Circulation Supervisor, the Technical Services Supervisor and the Director with specific and delegated duties. Establishes and maintains good public relations with community members and patrons and performs other related assignments as required to include technology components of the Library. Reports to the Director or assigned supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

The following duties are normal for this position.

  • Welcomes and assists patrons in finding library materials, in accessing databases or other information, checks materials in and out, places reserves, issues library cards, and provides reference service.
  • Prepares publications for program flyers and handles social media advertising for the Village Library as designated by Director.
  • Provides individual and group technology training for patrons and staff.
  • Plans and presents assigned programs and performs outreach to the community.
  • Enforces library rules with tact and handles situations with mature judgment.
  • Assists the Children's Librarian with children's programs, outreach and may substitute when necessary.
  • Assists with the processing of library materials by searching for matching bibliographic records, modifying the record to fit the individual item and preparing material for the shelves.
  • Assists in placing orders with vendors, checking shipments for accuracy, and may search for matching cataloging records from online bibliographic databases.
  • Performs routine circulation operations on computer, answers phone, and does routine clerical work as assigned.
  • Recognizes established priorities in performing duties and should be able to work on several projects at once.
  • An employee in this class is responsible for assisting patrons and other staff members and performs other routine clerical functions as assigned, including typing and filing.
  • Must type 35 wpm.
  • The work is performed according to the practices and procedures of the Library Department and the Village of Palm Springs.
  • Assists with the technology components of the Library to include audio visual, green screen, virtual reality, and all library technical functions.
  • Assists with computers, websites, electronic devices, digital resources, and more for all ages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED is required, some college experience is preferred. Library and computer experience is preferred. Ability to speak, read, and write English well. Bilingual (Spanish speaking) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of technology, library and office terminology is required.
  • Should have good public relation skills, be tactful and courteous.
  • Microsoft Office, Internet searching, and other technology experience is required.
  • Requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Must have proficient computer skills, the ability to type 35 wpm, and be able to use multi-line telephone.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of photocopier, cash register, computer software, tablets, mobile devices, smart TV's, and other business equipment, as necessary.

PROBATION:
All positions serve a one (1) year probationary period

  • Insurance coverage becomes effective the 1st of the month following 60th day of employment
  • Group Life Insurance policy of $50,000 paid for by the Village for employees
HOLIDAYS:
We have 13 paid holidays per year. Police Holiday is paid or comp'd at ten (10) hours for holiday except birthday which is at 8 hours. Birthday is an additional paid holiday but must be requested approved by supervisor, and taken in the same week as the birthday occurs.

PERSONAL LEAVE TIME:
Accrues weekly from hire date at the rate depending on length of time in service. PLT may be used, paid, after six (6) months.
