Responsible for working at the circulation desk to provide general library support in such areas as technical service, reference, circulation, patron assistance, and basic computer support.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Manage the circulation desk independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Basic/light cleaning and organizing of the library space.
  • Use Voyager circulation software to check materials in and out, update patron records, and may assist in the notation of fines and fees.
  • Shelve and shelf read materials according to Library of Congress Classification.
  • Assist in processing new materials when they arrive.
  • Assist patrons in using computers and copiers, and locating materials within the physical or online library
  • Problem solve patron issues and refer patrons to librarians or other full time staff.
  • Check in and distribute mail.
  • Responsible for always arriving on time for shift change.

Additional Functions as Assigned:
  • Process and fines and fees by updating patron records and sending notifications to the Bursar's Office.
  • Coordinate the annual Poetry Contest including marketing, gathering entries, recruiting judges, facilitating the judging process, and cultivating the entries into a file for publication.
  • Plan and arrange monthly/seasonal displays within the library.
  • Open the library M-F; record door counter and process newspapers.
  • Oversee the Baker & Taylor lease plan books in ordering, processing books received, and returning materials. Update blog accordingly with new books.
  • Responsible for the serials collection including processing new periodicals and maintaining outdated issues.
  • Provide clerical support to the Library Director in the acquisition of materials. This includes preparing requisitions, reconciling expense reports, maintaining accurate records of orders within a budget database, and checking orders as they arrive against invoices.
  • Record database statistics monthly.
  • Provide backup support for interlibrary loans.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of a high school diploma or GED and specialized training (technical certification /associate's degree) or two (2) to three (3) years of related experience in library or secretarial positions.

Must be able to use modern office technology. Proficient at computer skills; knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing. Must be able to follow complex written and verbal directions. Capable of working independently with minimal supervision and have the ability to focus on the task at hand, but still be able to sense the needs of library patrons at the circulation desk. Provide excellent customer service and stay calm in a busy work environment. Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of professional library practices and procedures.
