JOB POSITION #227: Library Youth Services Program Clerk

NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 1 - 2

DEPARTMENT: Library

WORK LOCATION: Farmington Public Library

HIRING SALARY: $12.50/hour

PAY GRADE: Temporary

TYPE OF POSITION: Part-Time

DAYS WORKED: Varies, includes weekends, evenings and holidays

HOURS WORKED: Approximately 15-25 hours per week

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Supervised by the Youth Services Coordinator. Work is performed under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, Youth Services Librarian, or as determined by the Youth Services Coordinator.

Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of this position.

Provides courteous and respectful assistance to the public in person and over the phone at the Youth Services Desk. Greets patrons, locates and provides information, instructs patrons in the use of library catalogs, assists with locating materials, refers inquiries to appropriate personnel when necessary, and promotes library programs.

Develops, sets up, and presents programs for the library, contributing to the creation and enhancement of library offerings. Actively engages with patrons of all ages during programs, fostering a positive and welcoming environment.

Collects and tracks program attendance statistics and other library statistics.

Sets up various audio/visual technology and equipment, ensuring smooth operation of library events and programs.

Prepares and organizes materials needed for programs such as books, craft materials, or supplies for activities.

Maintains the neat and orderly appearance of the Youth Services desk, shared workspaces, and the library.

Assists in planning, executing, and closing projects to improve the youth services department.

Participates in and attends staff meetings, trainings, daily shows, programs, and other projects of the library as required and/or assigned.

Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.

Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.

The ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions is essential.

Must be comfortable presenting in front of large audiences, speaking publicly, reading books aloud, and running crowd control for large groups of youth and teens.

Must learn responsibilities, procedures and policies primarily through oral instruction and observation that takes place on-the-job. Training is hands-on, with repetition and reinforcement.

Must be a team player with excellent customer service and time management skills. Creativity, flexibility, organization, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task effectively are essential.

Attendance is an essential function of this position. Must be available to work varied work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compliance with procedures, policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations of the Youth Services department, Farmington Public Library, and the City of Farmington is crucial.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Background check is required.

This position requires participation in and compliance with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety Program.

Enjoys working with toddlers, children, youth and teens.

Enjoy public speaking and presentation of programs.

Ability to plan and organize programming for multi-aged children, while working with parents, caregivers, and other adults present.

Ability to work with groups of multi-aged children with no adults present.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, patiently and effectively with the staff and the public on all age levels and cultural backgrounds in any situations.

Ability to communicate and follow instructions, both oral and written, and follow established routines.

Ability to learn and apply library procedures and policies.

Ability to learn and use library organization systems, technology, and resources.

Ability to train and work with possible and established volunteers.

Working knowledge of personal computers and software.

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.

Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision after training, within the context of a team environment.

Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.

Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to learn to operate tools and equipment listed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Library's online catalog and automation system, automated book return, self-check machines, computer reservation system, personal computer and applicable software, book carts, calculator, copy and fax machines, telephones, mobile devices, tablets, audio-visual equipment (such as projectors, sound systems, DVD players), electronic gaming equipment, music system, die-cut equipment, 3D printer and software, maker technology, and automobile.
