General Definition of Work

Performs skilled administrative support work, assists patrons at the circulation desk, provides readers' advisory services, assists staff with presenting programs for all ages, assists patrons use library equipment and locate library materials, prepares materials for circulation, maintains records, and files, and performs related work as assigned.

14 hours in a typical week

Thursdays 10:00-7:00 and Fridays 10:00-6:00 and occasional Saturdays 10:00-2:00.

Most work will be conducted at the Main Library in Burgaw, but some work will take place across the street from the Main Library at our Local History and Genealogy Library Annex.

Essential Functions

  • Provides general library services at circulation desk; registers patrons; checks books and other materials in and out; unloads book drop; assists patrons in person, on the phone, and over email; processes new/replacement patron cards; informs patrons of library policies and services.
  • Assists patrons in locating items/information in the library; assists and instructs patrons in the use of library catalog, internet, children's accelerated reader list, copier, audio visual materials, etc.; assists patrons with internet searches and computer applications.
  • Schedules meeting room requests; registers patrons for library programs.
  • Identifies items for holds, repairs, etc.; arranges cart for reshelving; shelves library materials; reads shelves to ensure proper organization; searches shelves for overdue/lost books.
  • Assists staff in presenting programs for all ages.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience

General knowledge of library procedures, methods and techniques; general knowledge of and interest in books including reader interest levels; general knowledge of research techniques and procedures; general knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; ability to meet the public with poise and self assurance, and to deal tactfully and courteously with library customers; skill in the use of library equipment, materials and resources; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, library patrons and the general public.

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in library work or some related customer service experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
