The successful Music Director (MD) at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (ELC) will be a person with a heart for Jesus and His people that shows as they lead us in music to the foot of Jesus’ cross in reverent worship! Working in close relationship and cooperation with the Lead Pastor and volunteers, the MD will plan and execute all components of the Music Ministry including leading the Music Team on Sundays, directing and/or accompanying the Chancel Choir, and designing unique worship experiences for our congregation.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate with the Lead Pastor and Music Team volunteers to create and execute an engaging, Christ-centered worship experience.
  • Lead worship services on Sundays, and other non-Sunday morning services such as required by liturgical calendar and Emmanuel’s worship schedule (such as, but not limited to Lent, Holy Week, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day).
  • Direct and/or accompany rehearsals and performances
  • Recruit new members of the Chancel Choir as needed
  • Oversee the volunteer Jubilation Bell Choir Director, scheduling the bells as appropriate throughout the year.
  • Recruit, organize, and rehearse special music soloists and ensembles for participation in worship as needed, including artists from within the congregation or outside talent.
  • Responsible for selection, purchase, and preparation of music.
  • Maintain:
    • Paper and/or digital copies of music
    • Musical instruments (piano/organ tuning, etc.)
    • Licenses required to play and stream copyrighted material
  • Be willing to introduce and teach new worship songs to the ELC Congregation.
  • Be alert to new music trends to enhance the music ministry at ELC.
  • Work with the Audio/Visual Team to ensure sound systems are working and running properly.
  • In cooperation with the Volunteer Music Team and the ELC Admin, ensure that slides used in worship are correct and easily readable.
  • Together with Lead Pastor, provide final review and editing of any print materials for worship.
  • First right of refusal for all weddings, funerals/memorial, and events where a musician is needed in the life of Emmanuel.
  • Spend within a budget and work with Lead Pastor and Finance on a yearly budget proposal.
  • Attendance at staff meetings will be required.
  • Arrange for substitute musicians in times of absence/vacations.

Qualifications – The Music Director will have:

  • A passion for Jesus that is contagious and genuine as expressed through their life. The MD will sense a strong call to lead the ELC Congregation into a deep sense of worship, helping to bring us to the cross!
  • Excellent pianist skills.
  • Ability to play the piano and sing at the same time is preferred.
  • Experience with the organ is a plus, but not required.
  • Three years or more experience:
    • As a Music Director in a church environment
    • Directing vocal, choral, and instrumental musicians
    • Training, conducting and/or performing
  • A proven track record of working well with volunteers.
  • A commitment to fostering a work environment of trust and teamwork with a goal of excellence.
  • The ability to work with diverse personalities and situations in a positive, professional, and constructive manner.
  • The ability to work well under pressure, with multiple deadlines and a variety of workloads.
  • The ability to maintain and organize an efficient and healthy work schedule.
  • The ability to use all common Office software and hardware platforms.
  • The willingness to agree to the LCMC’s Statements of Faith and Pastoral Admonition.
  • The ability to pass an ELC background check.

Education:

  • BA/BFA in Music, Music Education, or equivalent preferred.

Employee Status: Hourly Non-Exempt

Reports to: Lead Pastor

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions and duties of this job. The noise level in the office area and in the sanctuary is usually quiet to moderate. Since everyone on staff works on a time schedule governed by the needs of the congregation members and administrative staff’s appointments, the work and general environment can become somewhat hectic at times. Therefore, it is essential that the employee can, both physically and emotionally, effectively handle the normal chaos and quick changes associated with the job.

While performing the essential functions and duties of this job, the employee is required to do detailed work, using arms, hands, and fingers to manipulate the required office equipment and instruments. The employee intermittently is required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, bend and reach throughout the day. Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is needed. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
