JOB SUMMARY:

Ramapo College of New Jersey is seeking candidates for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Music Production, starting September 1, 2025. Candidates may be considered for the rank of Associate Professor upon review. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate production courses, contribute to the operation and development of our impressive recording and electronic music studios, and engage in collaboration, artistic work/research, and college service. The candidate will teach and mentor undergraduate students in the Music Program and be comfortable integrating contemporary, popular, and global styles of music into their curriculum. Additionally, the candidate will teach courses in Ramapo's MFA in Creative Music Technology including Thesis during the summer session, and direct the MFA program in rotation with current faculty, sharing responsibility for planning and growth. The candidate should demonstrate a strong record of artistic and professional work and/or academic research, as well as promise for future scholarship, and faculty service to the Program and college. The candidate might teach in additional music fields: music industry, musicianship, musicology/ethnomusicology, performance, education, or music therapy/psychology. The Music Program, with its distinctly contemporary orientation, emphasizes creativity, experiential learning, and professional training in a liberal arts framework. Strong candidates will have a commitment to innovation related to contemporary music practice, performance, and pedagogy. The Program aims to prepare graduates as well rounded, creative, and innovative music professionals.

Examples of Duties

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach production and music technology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (3 / 3 load) with additional graduate courses being offered in the summer, for additional compensation.
  • Collaborate in directing the MFA in Creative Music Technology.
  • Share responsibility for the operation and development of the Les Paul Recording Studio and Electronic Music Lab.
  • Share responsibility in recruiting and coordinating adjunct instructors.
  • Advise and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Develop interdisciplinary, international, and experiential curricula and contribute to Program development.
  • Conduct innovative artistic work, and/or scholarly research in creative music technology.
  • Engage in faculty service activities, such as committee work with peers, within the college and the broader academic community.
  • Assist with outreach and recruitment of students.
  • When appropriate, apply for and manage external grants to support the facilities and/or research activities as needed in partnership with the Ramapo office of Grants and Sponsored Programs.


Qualifications

  • A doctorate in a field related to music technology or a terminal degree in music technology or production is required by the time of appointment.
  • Musical training and expertise in areas such as music production, electronic music, composition, sound design, digital signal processing, analog and digital synthesis, creative coding, instrument design/hardware hacking, acoustic ecology, spatial audio, performance, improvisation, theory, musicology, or ethnomusicology, including performance skills and keyboard proficiency.
  • Minimum 2 years undergraduate and/or graduate level teaching experience.
  • Professional experience in audio engineering, production, and/or composition/songwriting.
  • Proficiency with a broad range of music software and hardware audio systems, including Pro Tools, Max/MSP, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live on Mac systems.
  • Fluency with large format recording consoles (SSL) and PA systems, networked audio (DANTE), microphone techniques and outboard equipment.
  • Proficiency with interactive coding languages such as Python, Javascript, and Open Frameworks.
  • Commitment to innovation, and contemporary practice in the field of music technology, and continuing artistic and scholarly research.
  • Ability and interest to teach students with diverse musical backgrounds and with diverse musical interests.
