Position Announcement
The Utah Tech University Music Department seeks a highly qualified, enthusiastic, and motivated Instructor of the Practice in Music to grow and lead the Utah Tech Marching Band and Varsity Pep Band. This unique faculty position will work closely with the tenure-track faculty Director of Bands to recruit and increase the size of the band program. This position will also partner with others in the Music department, Athletics, and other departments to create high quality performances that will benefit the university at a variety of events.

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) two-year professional-track faculty position; contingent upon funding thereafter. Faculty service begins August 2025, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2025. Annual salary of $50,000, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching. Responsibilities
In addition to directing and recruiting the Utah Tech Marching Band and Varsity Pep Band, this position will:
- Administer the athletic band program including planning, program development, and budgeting.
- Provide leadership of the athletic bands including music selection, and/or arranging; field show design; and supervision of Athletic Band staff.
- Collaborate with Music department to enhance instrumental and music educational offerings. Preference given to a high brass instructor who can build a private studio and teach high brass classes.
- Keep current with development in the discipline; mentor and support students; be accessible outside of classrooms and rehearsals; engage in service activities in support of the university and community.
- Work closely with Athletics and Athletic Marketing to collaborate regarding events management.
- Attend college recruiting fairs, open houses, and other community events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in music and experience directing a marching band required. Doctorate in Music with experience directing college marching bands preferred, with ABD candidates also being considered.
- Experience mentoring students, leading student travel, and teaching at the college level.
- Ability to use software to aid drill design, music arranging, and other essential tasks.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with students, fellow music faculty, athletic staff and administration, and the general public.
- Demonstrated effectiveness with recruiting and retaining music students.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
