Senior Reporter Job at Tribune Publishing in Chicago

Tribune Publishing, Chicago, IL, United States, 60290

Summary:

The Chicago Tribune is looking for a reporter to join its sports team at the largest news organization in the Midwest. This reporter will be responsible for producing clear and contextualized stories about college sports on and off the field, with an emphasis on teams in Illinois and the Big Ten Conference as well as the occasional national story focused through a Midwestern lens.

What you will do:
  • Be a self-directed, experienced journalist who can juggle reporting multiple stories at once and cover college sports at the micro and macro level
  • While this person will cover some daily college sports news and the occasional game, the Tribune is seeking a writer who will work independently to develop a cadre of sources and dig deep for unique enterprise stories
  • Break news and tell compelling tales that resonate with readers
  • Conceptualize, conceive and execute big-picture pieces that could take weeks or even months to complete and do so while balancing daily tasks
  • In addition to covering college sports teams and notable athletes and coaches based in our coverage area, this journalist will also be intensely focused on the Big Ten Conference and its role in the rapidly changing major college sports landscape, including NIL
  • TV deals and the business impact of sports on the markets
What you will bring:
  • Demonstrated experience covering a major sports beat, preferably college sports
  • Ability to cut through talking points and coach and athletic director speak to tell readers what is happening in college sports
  • Bring fresh ideas on how to cover a variety of college sports and schools to the table, especially in the larger Big Ten Conference
  • Work well on their own but, when the needs arise, can work collaboratively with reporters on other beats
  • Be a fearless journalist who is just as comfortable writing a compelling feature as they are filing FOIA requests to dig out information that universities and other athletic organizations don't want to hand over
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
