General Information

The following generally apply to most positions, but may not apply to certain positions.
  • Annual Leave Accrual of up 22 workdays, or 6.77 hours accrued per biweekly pay period, total of 176 hours, based on full time employment/compensated hours.
  • Annual Leave Redemption: The option to cash out up to 100 hours of accrued unused annual leave per year, based on established guideline and IRS requirement.
  • Deferred Compensation: Section 457 Plan and/or 401(k) Shared Savings Plan with up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
  • Health Plans: You are afforded a flexible credit of up to $18,200 annually for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans, depending on coverage tier and eligibility.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts: Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental, vision and dependent care expenses.
  • Pension Plan: Participation in the County's defined benefit plan which has reciprocity with CalPERS.
  • Bilingual Incentive: Proficiency levels by exam are $.65 per hour (Level I), $.90 per hour (Level II) to eligible positions.
  • Holidays: 14 paid days per calendar year, plus a personal floating holiday.
  • Real Time Incentive: Differential pay of 7.5% of base pay with certification, 5.0% for non-certified real time services, if eligible.

Under general direction, accurately take down verbatim in machine shorthand all required or requested court hearings; read back the record upon request; produce official, verbatim transcripts of court proceedings in conformity with court standards, codes, Rules of Court, and time requirements; maintain records in accordance with GC 69955; and perform related duties.

Examples of Duties (With or Without Reasonable Accommodations)

  • Stenographically or voice records verbatim notes of all court proceedings for extended periods of time;
  • Provides transcription or reads back record of proceedings;
  • Requests clarification from speakers as necessary for accuracy;
  • Produces and certifies formal, written transcripts;
  • Maintains two forms of archival of stenographic notes and transcripts;
  • Archives notes on court provided electronic storage system
  • Organizes and ensures security and confidentiality of official records;
  • Receives and processes transcript requests in a timely manner;
  • Provides estimates of cost of transcripts;
  • Researches medical, legal and technical terminology as well as case citations and related information as necessary for an accurate court record;
  • Maintains current software program of choice;
  • Transport, sets-up and maintains court reporting, transcription and archival equipment.
  • Provides rough transcript to judicial officers upon request.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications (With or Without Reasonable Accommodation)

Licensure:

In accordance with Section 8016 of the California Business and Professions Code, official court reporters working in any court shall possess a current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) certificate issued by the Court Reporters' Board of California.

DESIRABLE CERTIFICATION & SKILLS:
  • Realtime skills
  • National Court Reporter Association or other realtime certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Laws, regulation and practice relating to court reporting and transcription;
  • Legal terminology, court operations and courtroom procedure; courtroom etiquette and conventions;
  • Court reporting computer software.

Skills in:
  • Report court proceedings at a rate of 200 plus words per minute.
  • Grammar and transcription knowledge to complete accurate transcripts
  • Time management of multiple transcript requests and court coverage assignments

Ability to (with or without reasonable accommodation):
  • Simultaneously listen to and make verbatim record of court proceedings;
  • Pay attention to conversational details.
  • Operate and maintain reporting equipment and related computer equipment;
  • Work in presence of court audience.
