About Vogue Summer School
Vogue Summer School invites high school students who are curious and passionate about the world of fashion to experience it first-hand in the heart of New York Cityone of the most important fashion capitals in the world. Students will explore a range of topics shaping the industry today and can choose from specialized courses in fashion business, fashion styling, and fashion media.
The program, which consists of four 2-week terms across June and July, will provide students with direct access to fashion-world professionals, and faculty will host daily live sessions. Faculty-guided tours of notable industry sites in NYC will bring a firsthand experience of the fashion world. All courses are taught by fashion industry experts in collaboration with teaching professionals.
Job Summary
Instructors support the Lead Instructor and are focused on the well-being and educational experience of our high school students. They are expected to be with the students for 9 weekdays between the hours of 8:30AM and 4:30PM. They prepare classrooms, convene classes, take attendance, track student progress and wellbeing, communicate daily with program staff, grade student work, and guide students through exercises -- directed by the Lead Instructor -- to recap important points/themes, promote independent work, and assist students with assigned projects. Instructors will escort students to and from off-campus site visits, including travel throughout the five boroughs on the subway system. In collaboration with the Lead Instructor, Instructors may be assigned to lead a few class sessions throughout the term.
Before the term begins, Instructors may be asked to provide feedback on instructional strategies, site visits, and guest speakers as featured in the draft syllabus, created by the Lead Instructor. At the end of the term, Instructors provide feedback and fill out a rubric on each students performance, all of which form part of the narrative evaluation that a student receives.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required; a graduate degree (obtained or in progress) is strongly recommended. Instructors must have at least 2 years of high school teaching experience, with some experience in teachingfashion design, fashion styling, creative direction, cultural studies, or visual arts. Experience leading student field trips and navigating the NYC subway system is strongly desirable. Professional experience in the fashion industry is desirable but not required. Three professional references are required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Session:
- Provide feedback to the Lead Instructor and Vogue Summer School program staff on the syllabus, course project, site visits, and guest speakers and assist the Lead Instructor, as needed, in planning activities that help achieve the courses learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with the Lead Instructor and Vogue Summer School on instructional and classroom management strategies, and other course administration.
- Collaborate with the Lead Instructor to make materials accessible to students on the Canvas learning management system.
- Complete asynchronous training sessions on diversity and inclusion, protection of minors, mandated reporter certification, mental health first aid, use of the Orah app, and de-escalation protocols.
- Attend two orientation sessions via Zoom: one discussing the Instructors roles and responsibilities, and one focused on the ethos and teaching practices of Vogue Summer School.
During Session:
- Support the Lead Instructor during daily class sessions. Act as the second-in-command for the classroom, providing commentary and explanation on course content, and leading exercises to confirm student understanding of material in collaboration with the Lead Instructor.
- Each morning, be on campus before students arrive to set up the classroom environment for the day, test IT equipment, and troubleshoot any programming issues.
- Take student attendance each morning and afternoon in the Orah app within the first 20 minutes of instruction time. Follow established protocols to report missing or absent students to the program team.
- Alert Vogue Summer School staff of any other issues and challenges that need to be addressed immediately. Collaborate with health and wellbeing specialists regarding any student illnesses.
- Document student needs, incidents, updates, and other information in the Orah app. Stay current on student issues by reading all pastorals and communicating with the teaching and program teams regarding any classroom problems that need to be addressed.
- Lead sessions as needed per prior arrangement with the Lead Instructor.
- Serve as backup instructor in case of Lead Instructors absence.
- Provide daily feedback on homework, both orally/in-person and via Canvas and guide students in preparation for their final project.
- Escort students to and from all site visits, working with the Lead Instructor and Academic Specialist. Navigate the subway system, keeping students together as a group and organizing travel. Resolve any missing student protocols as necessary, following established procedures.
- Act as a Mandated Reporter for the classroom.
- Communicate often and proactively with program staff as needed.
Post-Session:
- Provide written feedback on each student to the Lead Instructor and fill out a rubric about each student as part of the narrative evaluation that students receive upon successful completion of the program.
- Liaise with Vogue Summer School staff to review courses and provide feedback for future planning.
Instructional Dates with Open Positions (excluding the weekend):
- Term 1: June 9 - 20
- Term 2: June 23 July 4
- Term 3: July 7 - 18
- Term 4: July 21 August 1
Classes meet Monday through Friday in the first week of term, and Monday through Thursday in the second week of the term. Instructors are encouraged, but not required, to attend the program closing ceremony on the second Friday of the term.
