Job Description
The Performing and Visual Arts department’s mission is to expand the lives of our audience (and employees) within and beyond the Institution’s gates through the power of the performing and visual arts. The Performing and Visual Arts Resident Assistant team members support the department operations through inspiring, stimulating, and fostering the growth of our pre-professional students. The team of Residence Assistants in each dormitory consists of a Director, Assistant Director, four Residence Assistants and a Resident Nurse. Residence Assistants must be at least age 18. Commitment to work at least seven weeks is required. Seasonal employment (summer).
About Your Compensation
Compensation for this salaried position is $1,165/week for up to 9 weeks (starting on June 18).
About Your Work Day
- Creates a comfortable, safe and supportive atmosphere.
- Assist residents with getting settled into the residence hall.
- Provides orientation to residents on Chautauqua Institution, on-grounds facilities and programs.
- Enforce policies appropriate to the resident’s age group in a fair and consistent manner.
- Serve as the primary resource to address needs, problems and emergencies.
- The Resident Assistant is scheduled on a 24-hour rotated duty basis.
- Ensures the assigned floor and surrounding area is quiet after 11:00 p.m.
- Supervision of residence halls occurs daily during the following hours:
- Residents under age 18: 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
- Residents over age 18: 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
- Curfew checks are completed daily at 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
- Will cover a central office telephone on weekends on a rotating schedule. Counselors in Lincoln Dorm, Bellinger North, Bellinger West and Bellinger East cover the central office phone on a nightly basis on a rotating schedule.
- May include trips to local stores, pharmacies etc. Mileage is reimbursed.

- Chautauqua conducts pre-employment criminal background checks on Resident Hall Assistants at Bellinger Hall Dorms. Offers of employment will be contingent on the completion of the required check.
About the Referral Program
Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution will provide a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. In the case of seasonal positions working less than 6-months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30-days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.
About Your Schedule
Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as a requirement.

About Living on the Grounds
Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on our grounds or assist you with locating nearby housing arrangements for select opportunities based on business needs. Housing is not an option for many positions and may be of a cost to you. Candidates should assume there are no employer-provided or employer-assisted housing options available for this position unless it is otherwise stated.
This position offers employer-provided housing within the residence hall. Resident Assistants have their own room and bathroom.
