Senior Web Developer

Office of Information Technology

The Senior Web Developer is responsible for planning, designing, coding, documenting, testing, and maintaining custom web applications that support Brown's faculty, staff, and students. In this role, the incumbent must facilitate productive relationships with a diverse constituency. As a member of Brown’s developer community, the senior web developer assists in establishing and promoting common development methodologies and tools to ensure all local systems integrate with the broader campus IT infrastructure. The senior web developer collaborates with the team to promote standardization and efficiencies across the division and to maintain a secure and reliable computing environment aligned with OIT's established standards and industry best practices.

Job Qualifications:

1. BA/S in Computer Science or related field and 2-3 years of related technical experience
2. Demonstrated expertise in developing and maintaining database-driven web applications with advanced knowledge of various relational database management systems. MySQL strongly preferred
3. Demonstrated project management, planning, and process modeling skills
4. Proficiency with programming languages related to web application development, including HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Node.js
5. Proficiency with application development frameworks, including Laravel, Next.js, Kohana, Codeigniter, etc. Laravel strongly preferred
6. Proficiency with frontend development frameworks, including React, Vue. React strongly preferred
7. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
8. A strong curiosity and ability for learning new technologies (frameworks, programming languages, methodologies, etc)
9. Advanced knowledge of Git
10. Experience with shell scripting
11. OK with being a member of the team’s on-call rotation
12. Some experience with CMSs. Drupal strongly preferred
13. Some knowledge and practice with devops concepts like building CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, creating Docker and Docker Compose files, and managing apps deployed to a Kubernetes cluster
14. Ability to understand non-technical users’ requirements in an academic environment, and to generate user-friendly solutions quickly within the context of departmental initiatives and division goals
15. Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a complex environment with competing demands
16. Strong communications skills and the ability to collaborate with non-technical users throughout all phases of project design and implementation
17. Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
