Job: Sr Technical Writer
Location : 401 McIntire Road,Charlottesville, VA 22902 (Hybrid)
Duration:12 Months Contract
The County needs a Sr level Technical Writer to lead update of IT standards, polices, and instructions.
Some ON SITE as required
Expected duration is until 12/31/23. New PO will be provided
**DO NOT go by end date in Vector (this is based on fiscal yr end)!
Expected duration is until 12/31/23. New PO will be provided July 1 - forward
Tech Writing samples will be required if interview is requested. Please make sure your candidate has samples to share
40 hrs/week
2 -3 days on site required initially -- until manager is comfortable with work production.
Duration expected: 6 months
Parking available on site at no cost to contractors
ABOUT THE ROLE
Consult with staff to prepare technical and end user documentation for information technology program. This role will function as a primary writer-responsible for deliverables of with varied scope and complexity.
Responsibilities:
Prepare, review, revise, and maintain documentation in the form of user guides, integration guides, developer guides, in-platform instructions, installation/configuration instructions, system operations, policies, and standards.
Prepare, review, revise, and maintain end user resources and educational materials, including videos, demos, tutorials, training materials, in-depth user guides, general & technical overviews, FAQs, and in-product help documentation.
Review and edit previously written policies, standards, and manuals for consistency, conforming to existing styles where necessary, while recommending and implementing changes to more efficiently update content with future changes.
Collaborate with internal organizational teams, including IT Project Teams, IT Engineering, IT Support Services, System Management, and subject matter experts.
Gather and analyze technical and process information from various sources to document new or changing system functionality.
Write, format, edit, review, and proof procedural and technical information for technical and nontechnical users.
Assist in planning, scheduling, and tracking documentation work to meet system launch dates and end user deliverables.
Maintain a library of application documentation, cataloging it for internal and/or external use.
Create, publish and maintain templates for written documentation produced by others (technical specifications, RFP responses, etc.), ensuring a consistent "look and feel."
Test both the product and its documentation for accuracy and consistency.
Write software documentation from technical specifications, discussions with developers, and hands-on experimentation.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidate has technical acumen, demonstrably strong communication and writing skills, and can effectively interact with developers, data analysts, systems analysts, and project leads.
Experience making complex ideas understandable.
Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a technical field such as computer science or a focus on English, writing, or communications.
5-8 years of professional work experience in technical documentation..
Experience in creating documentation for audiences with different levels of technical skill.
Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
Experience creating graphics to more clearly communicate workflow processes and abstract topics.
Ability to write clearly and succinctly for multiple audiences using either formal or more casual tones.
Excellent work ethic and strong intellectual curiosity.
Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and multi-task.
Desire and ability to innovate and improve upon current processes.
Track record of effective collaboration.
Ability to thrive, without much oversight, in a constantly changing environment. Adapt rapidly to a changing industry and be able to adjust responsibilities, time, and objectives accordingly.
Experience working with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) both in-person and remote.
Experience creating infographics such as diagrams, screenshots, workflows, graphs, etc.
A proactive and open-minded attitude to resolving problems and delivering results.
Preferred: Prior experience working within IT Development, SaaS or web-based technology environment.
Bonus: Experience in presenting technical information in a live setting, such as classroom training, presentations, or video conference.
