Overview:

The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) is an independent, not-for-profit, biomedical research institute adjacent to the campus of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) located in Oklahoma City. OMRF investigators have internationally recognized expertise in Autoimmunity, Immunology, Genetics, Genomics, Aging, Cardiovascular Disease, and Cancer. OMRF follows an innovative cross-disciplinary approach to medical research and ranks among the nations leaders in patents per scientist.

Our OMRF Autoimmune Disease Institute houses Centers of Excellence and specialty research clinics and cohorts for Rheumatic Diseases (focusing on lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, ANA+ healthy individuals and Sjogren's disease) and for Multiple Sclerosis and related diseases. In addition to following over 4,000 patients with these conditions, teams of basic and clinical investigators conduct extensive clinical, translational and mechanistic research using samples obtained from these large clinical programs. We are fortunate to hold collaborative funding as an UM1 NIAID-funded Autoimmunity Center of Excellence, two U01 Autoimmunity Prevention Centers, one NIGMS-funded S06 Native American Research Center of Health in rheumatic disease, a NIAMS-funded P30 Oklahoma Rheumatic Disease Research Cores Center and NIGMS-funded U54 Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources. Responsibilities:

The James/Guthridge labs (james.omrf.org; Guthridge.omrf.org) is a translational immunology laboratory focused on understanding the pathogenesis, prediction, prevention and precision treatment of immune-mediated diseases to improve patients lives. We have large, complex experimental datasets partnered with detailed clinical data to help better understand disease and improve treatments. We also help lead large, national, NIH funded consortia such as the Autoimmune Centers of Excellence and Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Autoimmune and Immune-Mediated Disease. We are looking for a talented Scientific/Medical Writer to join our team. The Scientific Writer is responsible for producing and/or editing accurate, clear, and interesting content for manuscripts, grants, reports, lay summaries, white papers, website content and presentations.

The successful candidate will perform some combination of the following. Apply scientific principles and biomedical knowledge to understand, organize, and describe complex data for scientific, medical, and lay audiences. Coordinate input from a multi-disciplinary team while meeting tight deadlines. Help write, edit and proofread key documents. Maintain familiarity with relevant research, conduct literature reviews, and manage references. Assist with the design, development, and selection of scientific illustrations, tables, and figures. Track manuscript status from conceptualization through publication. Assist with cover letters and associated documents. Assist with letters of support, evaluation letters and other aspects of communication like patient newsletters. Update lab and departmental websites, including newsworthy content. Maintain common-use text describing facilities, resources, human subject sections and standard procedures. Assist with editing and writing grant progress reports, grant sections and collaborative grant documents. Summarize research results for lay audiences and community stakeholders. A senior candidate may assume a leadership role for a Scientific Writing Unit, hosting scientific writing workshops, writing groups and lunch-and-learns for junior investigators and trainees.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in biomedical science-related field and 2 years experience writing and editing scientific publications and grants. Alternatively, a masters or certification in scientific or medical writing with 2 years experience.

Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently on complex tasks. Attention to detail. Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ability to read, analyze and interpret an extensive variety of scientific, technical, financial, and legal documents. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to work with a wide array of individuals and to operate effectively in a team setting. Self-starter.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Immunology or related field; or Medical Degree; or at least two Immunology-related publications.

Immunology and/or clinical rheumatology experience a plus.

Previous experience with statistics and scientific and/or grant writing strongly preferred.
Proficiency in EndNote and GraphPad Prism (or other data visualization programs).
Data analysis and/or statistical training or expertise a plus.
