Job Summary:
Reporting to the Writing Center Director, Peer Writing Tutors will primarily work with students individually or in small groups to improve their writing skills. The Tutor will be expected to facilitate daily operations of the Writing Center by creating a welcoming and professional environment and maintaining precise records. Peer Writing Tutors are not copyeditors or proofreaders; instead, they help writers improve their skills in analyzing and revising academic writing.
Essential Job Functions:
•Effectively instructs University students in the development of writing skills and the writing process to enhance student writing competencies
•Provides one-on-one consultations to students.
•Provides assistance to students working with the online tutorial.
•Engages students in conversations that help to draw out and express their ideas.
•Assist students whose first language may not be English.
•Assesses students with writing difficulties and formulates individual plans for correcting those difficulties through instructor-student sessions.
•Reviews writing assignments and provide feedback.
•Discusses strategies for writing in a variety of discursive modes (i.e., academic courses, dissertations, and thesis).
•Collaborates in establishing and maintaining the Writing Center's objectives and procedures.
•Reviews and becomes skilled at using tutorial programs and materials already in use in the Writing Center.
•Collaborates in recruitment and marketing efforts for the Writing Center.
•Develops and presents knowledge-relevant workshops/seminars.
•Works effectively with colleagues to properly troubleshoot, maintain, and update the Writing Center Online program.
