State Capitol Editorial Writer/Columnist Job at Star Tribune in Minneapolis
Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN, United States, 55488
About Us
The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 157-year legacy. With seven Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.
Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We're seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state's most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.
The Job:
The Minnesota Star Tribune - the largest news organization in the Midwest - is looking to hire a dynamic journalist to join our Opinion Team. We have embarked on a mission to reimagine what opinion journalism can be and seek an accomplished and innovative writer who can help us break the mold. Our Editorial Opinion model is quickly evolving from the institutional voice and leaning into the rich, authentic, and distinctly individual voices of our writers. Our mission is to represent the heart of Minnesota by producing commentary that resonates with all Minnesotans. We are not just writing - we are shaping public discourse, under a new banner we're calling Strib Voices.
While every member of our editorial board weighs in on a range of topics, this particular Editorial Writer will specialize in focusing on the Minnesota state legislature and state politics. If you have a passion for well-reported perspectives, thought-provoking and engaging dialogue, a sense of humor, and can foster and embrace creative conversations, this might be the job for you.

More about the job:
- As a member of our Opinion team, you will work collaboratively to identify the most pressing concerns facing the state of Minnesota and craft commentary that stimulates important local and statewide public conversations. While you will be fluid in covering multiple issues, your primary focus will be deeply engaged coverage of the Minnesota state legislature, the governor, and state agencies.
- You have a record of accomplishment as a resourceful journalist who can keep a close read on the state's political pulse. You are a reflective thinker and close observer of trends and diverse perspectives that center Minnesota public discussion. You are solution oriented.
- You will spend much of your time at the state capital or on the trail of political issues as they bubble up across Minnesota's diverse geographies. Your commentary will connect local politics to broader state narratives, giving our readers sharp, relevant perspectives that help them understand how decisions in St. Paul affect their daily lives.
- You're comfortable in public settings, moderating panels and engaging with leaders and audiences.
- Through engaged reporting, focused research, and collegial discussions with editorial board colleagues, you will craft commentary that cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of public policy that governs the state. We are also planning to venture boldly into the world of multimedia - so your written word will need to play well with video and audio, too. Think podcasting your hot takes or creating quick-hit videos on the day's hottest debate.
