The primary responsibilities include optimizing, maintaining, and repairing complex radio systems and 911 communications centers for customers. This role does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Functions:
- Provide positive and efficient customer support by diagnosing, troubleshooting, discussing, and resolving wireless communication equipment questions and problems. This can be done in person, over the phone, via email, or at the company's shop location.
- Conduct diagnostic and analytical tests to diagnose and repair various wireless communication equipment such as dispatch consoles, paging infrastructure, trunked radio systems, and mobile installations.
- Analyze and interpret diagnostic test results to effectively repair and program radios and wireless equipment.
- Collaborate with customers, vendors, and shop management to determine deadlines, urgency, timelines, and schedules for completing repairs, maintenance, and programming, ensuring that the customer's needs are met.
- Prepare quotes and bids for customer projects.
- Act as the shop's safety coordinator, working closely with the safety representative from the company's headquarters to implement safety training and protocols.
- Perform wireless communications system programming according to industry practices and vendor criteria.
- Install radio and wireless mobile and base communications systems following industry practices and vendor criteria.
- Report any accidents, maintenance needs, or repairs to management when using company vehicles, while adhering to safe driving procedures as outlined in safe driver training.
- Maintain availability to work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to the nature of supporting public safety and first responder customers, technicians may be required to be on call, including overtime, with minimal notice.
- Be willing to travel, which may include local daily travel or overnight stays.
Other Essential Functions:
- Maintain cleanliness and perform basic maintenance of company vehicles.
- Complete time sheets, job tickets, and data entry accurately.
- Retrieve parts from the warehouse for repairs and maintenance.
- Lift boxes, tools, computers, service monitors, and other shop equipment as necessary.
Job Requirements
Education and/or Experience:
- Three to five years of experience in 2-way radio and wireless communication systems theory. Proficient in computer usage, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of complex communication systems.
- An associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or vocational school in electronics and wireless system repair is preferred but not required.
- Experience in diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and programming wireless communication equipment, such as 2-way radios, transmitters, receivers, and antennas for customers.
- Experienced with dispatch consoles, paging infrastructure, and trunked radio systems. Knowledge of radio repair, mobile installations, DC, AC, and RF Theory as it applies to wireless communications.
- Licenses, Certifications: An industry license (FCC, FICA or NARTE). A valid driver license and insurability in the state of employment. CET or NABER certification.
- Tools, Equipment, Machines (non office): Ability to operate test equipment to perform diagnostics on wireless equipment. Wireless communications test equipment such as service monitors, watt meters, VOM's, etc. Basic hand tools such as cordless power drills, screw drivers, wrenches, etc. are typically used in the performance of this job. Ladders and other equipment used to reach heights.
- Computer / Software / Office Machines: Uses computer or computerized tools to perform wireless communications system programming, repair, troubleshooting. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook e-mail. Proficient and accurate use of a computer, keyboard, monitor. Can operate a calculator or 10-Key, copier, fax, scanner, cell phone, and telephone. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of windows spreadsheet, word processing; data base, and Internet software.
- Language Skills: Must have ability to speak effectively in English with customers and co-workers. Must have ability to read and write in English. Ability to create, read, comprehends, and explain instructions, procedures, financial, technical, and informational manuals, reports, correspondence, and pricing for self and for others.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute percentages, per unit costs, and decimals using spreadsheet software, calculator or a 10-Key adding machine. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, percentages. Preferred but not required to have basic electronic theory.
