About the Role
Springer Nature, publisher of Nature, seeks a Chief Editor for Nature Sensors, a new journal launching in January 2026. Nature Sensors will be a multidisciplinary journal at the intersection of applied sciences and engineering, highlighting advancements in sensor technologies, enabling methods, and applications across diverse fields including environmental science, biomedicine, computational technology, and more. The journal will emphasize real-world, societal applications of sensor technology, publishing original research, reviews, commentary, and opinion pieces across this broad domain.
The journal aims to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration by uniting various scientific communities with the shared goal of developing and applying sensor technologies for societal benefit.
Nature Sensors will connect researchers, industry experts, innovators, policymakers, and the public and publish thought pieces exploring the impact of the ubiquity of sensors, the datafication of society, and other broader challenges and issues in the field.
Topics will span a wide array of disciplines, including (but not limited to): chemical sensors, sensing devices, image- and acoustics-based sensing, multi-modal sensing, quantum sensors, remote sensing, sensor networks, smart sensors, and signal processing, among others. Applications of these technologies will cover areas such as energy, environment, health and medicine, research, infrastructure, robotics, and beyond.
To lead this endeavor, we seek an ambitious and innovative Chief Editor to guide Nature Sensors into becoming the premier publication for sensor research and applications.
Role Responsibilities:
The Chief Editor will lead an editorial team, managing all aspects of the editorial process, from manuscript selection to commissioning and editing Reviews and News & Views articles, as well as contributing writing to the journal. Engaging with the scientific community through lab visits and international conferences will be essential; thus, willingness to travel is required.
The role offers the opportunity to work within a vibrant editorial and publishing network, including Nature, Nature Electronics, Nature Methods, and Nature Biomedical Engineering.
Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field with a strong research background
- Editorial experience is required
- Managerial experience is preferred
- Inventive, communicative, and personable
- Broad scientific knowledge
- Strong writing skills, and the capacity to quickly understand emerging research areas are important for the role.
This position is ideally based in our New York or Berlin offices, though other Springer Nature locations may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
