About the Position

As a Library Associate III, you'll be an essential part of a team that's dedicated to making our library a welcoming and engaging place for all. Whether you're guiding a curious mind to new resources or managing the day-to-day operations that keep the library running smoothly, you'll play a vital role in inspiring learning and exploration.
The County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries is creating a list to fill current and future part-time and full-time vacancies for customer service-focused positions at various library locations. Working under the general supervision of a Library Branch Manager or a Senior Library Associate, the Library Associate performs a variety of clerical and technical duties in support of library services and customers. Assignments typically involve checking out, receiving, and shelving materials; receiving payments; providing customer support for the libraries' public computers and digital resources; as well as providing general customer assistance. The position requires reaching, bending, stooping, standing for long periods of time; moving loaded book trucks weighing 50-75 lbs.; using a computer keyboard; and picking up 25-30 lb. bags of books. This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited-term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, the Library Associate must have the ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and decision-making, along with the capacity to be a flexible team member that can balance competing demands. Must possess the aptitude and desire to consistently demonstrate excellent quality customer service. Preferred skills include proficiency in computer applications and data entry, and the ability to quickly learn new technology. Those with Spanish/Mixtec bilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

Education and Experience
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate at the time of employment AND one year of experience performing duties comparable to a library page, administrative assistant, or a customer service / retail representative.
Licenses and Certificates
A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Pension Benefit and Employee Contribution Rates:
The County's pension is a defined benefit plan that provides a guaranteed monthly pension payment for life based on your time in service, wages, and other factors. The County is the primary contributor to the pension fund, but the health of the pension fund also depends on mandatory employee contributions. Employees are required to pay a percentage of their base pay towards the pension fund, ranging from 5% to 19%. This amount is deducted from your paycheck pre-tax every pay period.
