Job Description
REPORTS TO: VP of COMMUNICATIONS
Live Action is a pro-life organization devoted to ending abortion and building a culture of life,
and uses all aspects of media (including video, print, and social media) in furtherance of this
mission. The Staff Writer & Researcher (SWR) is a skilled communicator with advanced
writing and editing skills.
The SWR’s primary role is to produce or assist in the creation of written content for Live Action
including through Live Action News (LAN), major reports and white papers, research projects,
memoranda, executive summaries, and strategy documents, as assigned by the COO. The SWR
is not responsible for social media copy, but may be requested to craft social media copy at the
discretion of the COO and other organizational leaders. The SWR may also assist in crafting
editorial statements, commentaries, and opinion pieces as ghostwriter or as coauthor.
The SWR also supports the research team and fact-checking work of Live Action by working on
special research projects as assigned by the COO. The SWR has research and writing expertise in
the areas of: (1) the history of abortion and the abortion industry, (2) the politics of abortion
including the legal issues pertaining to the Roe v. Wade decision, and (3) the ethical and moral
aspects of abortion and related bioethical issues.
The SWR is analytical, detail-oriented, organized, and can synthesize large amounts of
information in clear, written format. The SWR is a self-starter who can work independently,
think outside the box, develop fresh ideas, and thrive in a challenging and fast-paced
environment. The SWR works on a collaborative team of creators and storytellers, and can
brainstorm new ways to further Live Action’s mission.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
● Performs research and writing projects assigned by the COO and Department Heads.
● Collaborates with the Lead Researcher as well as third-party and contract researchers as
assigned by the COO.
● Regularly contributes original writing to LAN by pitching stories to the Managing Editor
or by accepting a story assigned by the Managing Editor.
● Works in close collaboration with the LAN editorial team to develop stories and leads.
● Conducts interviews as approved by the COO to be used in original reporting, and as
necessary works with the video team to recommend or vet interview subjects.
● Works with all content producers on a collaborative basis to assist video and social media
teams in their messaging and regular projects.
● Collaborates with the video team on script writing as requested.
Requirements
● Bachelor’s degree preferred.
● Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a similar capacity.
● Strong commitment and dedication to the pro-life position.
● Experience researching abortion, government/law/policy, and other social sciences.
● General contextual knowledge of the abortion industry and abortion politics in the U.S.,
and familiarity with institutions and procedures of American government and politics.
● Ability to understand and engage with law, life sciences, and bioethics journals and
similar sources.
● Proficient in professional research methods and fact-checking.
● Excellent critical thinking, organization, and analytical skills.
● Excellent writing and communication skills, capable of self-editing.
● Demonstrate a high level of diplomacy, sound judgment, and discretion when interacting
with third-parties and outside organizations.
● Proficiency in Word, Excel, Google, and Slack.
Expectations:
● Remote work is permitted and some travel will be expected.
● Keeps a Monday to Friday schedule during normal business hours; official schedule of
hours to be discussed with supervisor.
● Attends all meetings as assigned by the COO or executive management.
● Contributes a minimum of four (4) publishable LAN pieces per week.
● Follows editorial standards and communications policies as set forth by Live Action.
● Maintains good working relationships with pro-life allies and partner organizations, and
projects a favorable image of Live Action.
● Stays abreast of current politics and news, and the state of the pro-life movement.
● Seeks philosophical and professional formation as a pro-life leader through continuing
education, and by utilizing sources made available by Live Action.
