Department: Precision

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Santa Clara, California

Compensation: $150,000 - $175,000 / year

Description

Precision is building a direct connection between the human brain and computers, to benefit the hundreds of millions of people worldwide suffering from neurological conditions. Established in 2021, we are a leader in the development and commercialization of brain-computer interfaces (BCI).

As a Precision employee, you will be collaborating with experts across a diverse array of fields-including neurosurgery, mechanical engineering, machine learning, and microfabrication-to push the boundaries of what is possible. You will be joining a well capitalized and fast-moving company. In the two years since Precision's founding, we have built and validated a product and have begun human trials in partnership with some of the country's leading neurosurgery programs. And you will be working toward a deeply meaningful goal: restoring function to people living with devastating neurological conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative disease such as ALS. Our platform will enable these individuals to regain independence, communicate with loved ones, and return to work.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Product Designer to join our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing intuitive and effective user interfaces for our BCI applications and related tools. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product, clinical, machine learning, and software teams, to create solutions that meet the needs of both providers and end-users.

This position is on-site at our Santa Clara office. We are unable to consider people not currently based in the United States, and who do not have working rights.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Designing desktop platforms:
    • Lead the design of a desktop platform for providers and researchers that allows them to manage patients / research participants, execute research protocols, and visualize a neural data stream - the outputs of which will be used to train and validate our motor and language algorithms.
    • Ensure the platform is user-friendly, efficient, and optimized for the needs of medical professionals and researchers.
  2. Designing BCI applications:
    • Develop the first generation of BCI applications for users with spinal cord injury, ALS, and stroke, focusing on iPad, desktop, and/or mobile platforms.
    • Create intuitive interfaces that enhance user engagement and accessibility, ensuring a seamless experience across different devices.
  3. Developing training and onboarding for new users:
    • Design comprehensive training and onboarding experiences for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and prospective users, ensuring they can understand the BCI benefits, risks, how it will be implanted, and how it will be operated.
    • Collaborate with the clinical team to develop educational materials and user guides.
  4. Creating the BCI training & calibration user experience:
    • Work closely with the machine learning and software teams to understand the training and calibration requirements.
    • Design and optimize a training and calibration experience for the BCI system, allowing new users to rapidly, accurately, and easily control a digital device using their BCI.
  5. Lead design at Precision
    • Bring user-centered design practices to the company, and establish ways of working with other functions at Precision
    • Instill good design practices at Precision - including establishing a critique / design review process, design brief templates, etc.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 6+ years of experience in product design, with a strong portfolio showcasing desktop, mobile, and/or iPad applications.
  • Proven experience designing applications for healthcare, neuroscience-related fields, or accessibility is a plus.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
