Reporting to the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center, Professional Writing Tutors help students engage thoughtfully in writing and revision, offering empathy and feedback in 1:1 visits. Professional writing tutors should be experienced in long-form academic writing projects such as theses and dissertations.

Responsibilities:
  • Support students in 1:1 tutoring sessions (in person and remote)
  • Create resources, such as templates, visual aids, guides, checklists, or tip sheets to help students understand common writing challenges and expectations across disciplines
  • Assist with writing groups and writing studios
  • Develop and facilitate student-facing workshops based on interest and need
  • Engage in supervisory meetings and team meetings as scheduled
  • Complete visit notes for tutoring sessions; alert center leadership about any concerning sessions
  • Engage in professional development, team building, and reflective practice
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Education, or other writing-intensive field (Ph.D. preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience working with writers engaged in long-form writing projects such as theses and dissertations
  • In-depth understanding of academic writing conventions, research methodologies, source integration, and citation standards (MLA, APA, Chicago) as applied in advanced research writing.
  • Skilled at identifying students' struggles and addressing them patiently and creatively.
  • Ability to make students feel comfortable and motivated, explaining complex writing techniques in an accessible way
  • Ability to adapt to each individual student's needs
  • Experience supporting neurodivergent students preferred
  • Experience supporting English language learners and multilingual students preferred
