What would a typical day be like?

As a Mechanical Designer, you will:

  • Be responsible for the mechanical design of custom automation, robotic, AGV/AMR solutions using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Total ETO, and PDM Professional.
  • Participate in identifying the mechanical functional requirements with our Systems Design group
  • Perform engineering calculations to validate functionality, component sizing, speeds / rates, failure modes, etc to ensure the designed solution will be feasible, robust, and reliable.
  • Collaborate on design solutions with cross-functional teams (Electrical Design, Controls, Build).
  • Develop concepts and 3D designs utilizing what was proposed by the Applications group to align the design direction with the contractual scope and functional requirements.
  • Ensure solutions align to required compliance standards including safety, ergonomics, and more.
  • Lead interactive design reviews, both internal and customer facing, to communicate design direction with confidence and clarity, while receiving and evaluating cross-functional input.
  • Collaborate with the Supply Chain group to source and select major 3rd party technical vendors.
  • Produce 2D assembly and manufacturing drawings, pneumatic schematics, Bills of Materials, Spare Parts lists, and assist with required deliverable documentation.
  • Review other designer’s concepts, designs, and drawings to verify feasibility, accuracy, thoroughness, and alignment to JMP standards and best practices.
  • Assist with the development of other Mechanical Designers through coaching and mentorship.
  • Interact with the Project Lead, Mechanical Team Leads, and Project Managers to effectively communicate project status, issues, risks, scope management items, forecasts, and challenges.
  • Provide support, including bring hands on, during the manufacturing and build stages including troubleshooting, problem solving, and debugging to overcome any issues or challenges.
  • Assist the applications and sales teams, when required, in the creation of unique and inventive solutions to enhance their offerings and drive sales.
  • Assist with improving the Mechanical Design group through initiatives and improvements.

  • If selected as a Mechanical Project Lead, the Mechanical Designer will drive project design direction, oversee and delegate tasks to other Mechanical Designers, participate in project meetings with internal team members and the customer, manage project budgets and schedule, and be responsible for the success of the mechanical design portion of the project.
What Qualifies you for this opportunity?
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in electrical, mechanical, or software controls technology, and at least five years relevant work experience.
  • Proven leadership qualities including good oral and written communication skills.
  • Passion to motivate / develop team members while acting as a mentor to promote JMP values.
  • Ability to work independently and execute responsibilities with minor supervision.
  • Able to work as part of a team while providing direction to others and receiving feedback.
  • Tenacity to solve problems and take ownership of solutions with a sense of urgency.
  • Solid understanding of industrial automation and robotics.
  • Direct experience in an automation design role (Mechanical or Electrical) including strong aptitude of 3D CAD design, 2D drawings, and on-the-floor equipment troubleshooting.
  • Confident performing engineering calculations to analyze equipment parameters pertaining to force, movement, energy, and timing including nuanced interferences.
  • Proficient with sanitary design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack up, and component selection based on functional design needs and requirements.
  • Experience with cycle time analysis/simulations, process and flow breakdowns, and the development of critical requirements / specifications to drive design solutions.
  • Knowledge in pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical components (motors, sensors, etc.),
  • Familiarity and/or proficiency with SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD, TETO.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Experience with compliance to equipment design standards (i.e. ANSI, CSA, OSHA, CE, etc.)
  • Ability to explain detailed engineering concepts and ideas to a wide audience of people.
  • An ability to travel; Mechanical Designers should have the ability to travel within US and Canada
Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required for the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lifts or move up to 25 pounds.
