An Electric Distribution Designer's responsibilities include performing field analysis and reviewing standards and manuals to compile design sketches, calculations, and bills of materials to produce a construction-ready job package. Designers must possess an analytical competence to interact with a variety of individuals including engineers and experienced distribution system designers. Organization and attention to detail are vital to success in this field.
This position is based in San Diego, California. All applicants must reside or be willing to relocate to the greater San Diego area.

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.

In the early 1960s, the Asplundh Service Co. was established as a subsidiary of the Asplundh Tree Expert Co. to perform underground electric and telephone cable work. Over time, this work transitioned back into the Tree Co. until 1990 when a fast-growing utility construction company, B & J Maintenance, was acquired. Based on Long Island, New York, this operation expanded Asplundh's capabilities in overhead and underground electric, as well as gas, construction, and maintenance services.
To take advantage of Asplundh's name recognition in the utility industry, the name was changed to Asplundh Construction, Corp. in 1992. Operations soon expanded into Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, and then to the West Coast.
In 2004, Asplundh Construction became part of Asplundh Infrastructure Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Asplundh, which primarily focuses on providing services for electric and gas infrastructure (non-vegetation management). - 0-2 years of experience: $18/hr - $32/hr
- 3-5 years of experience: $28/hr - $41/hr
- 5-10 years of experience: $35/hr - $51/hr
- 10+ years of experience: $40/hr - $60/hr

- Design and prepare, construction orders related to underground facilities associated with electric distribution systems applying engineering principles, prescribed standards, guides, specifications, and practical design solutions.
- Apply the SDG&E's standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, and procedures or appropriate industry standards in preparing layouts of underground electric distribution facilities.
- Prepare design drawings for client review, permitting, and construction.
- Guided design of power distribution systems to the determination of optimal civil and electrical construction layouts. Including, but not limited to, primary distribution equipment (such as transformers, switches, fuses, etc), high voltage and low voltage cables and connections, service entrance switchboards, trench route, and structure set locations.
- Guided design development of point-to-point wiring diagrams.
- Assist in the performance of load studies on distribution transformers, investigate and mitigate circuit overloads and voltage complaints to determine necessary corrective action.
- Operate within the program to contact landowners and/or their agents, to negotiate an agreement of Rights of Way (easements) for proposed utility equipment.
- Obtain and review necessary mapping information for easement processing.
- Prepare and submit required reports and correspondence.
- Perform the acquisition of field data.
- Assist in the gathering of information from field notes.
- Perform tasks such as digitizing, copying, and scanning drawings, prints, and maps.
- Utilize client and company information systems to track and update design activities.
- Follow Code of Safe Practices as outlined in the company safety policies.
- Assist in the development and review of custom designs and sequences.
- Computer-Aided Drafting and Quality Control.
- Assist with project management to deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Work with Clients, Managers, and Engineers to coordinate project designs.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Analytical competence to interact with a variety of individuals including engineers and experienced distribution system designers.
- Proficient in Computer Aided Design and MS Office Suite (experience with 3D platforms a plus).
- AutoCAD and/or GIS Skills desired.
- Preferred to possess a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Codes (NESC).
- Ability to produce accurate work with attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Possess outstanding initiative, well-organized, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Possess a strong awareness of current and emerging industry standards, vendors, and technologies as they relate to the consulting engineering industry.
- Associate degree from an accredited two-year college or technical school in computer science, computer-aided architectural drafting and design, or a related field.
- 0-3 years total accumulated position-related experience in CAD or design field.
- 2+ years of Underground Distribution Design experience preferred.
- Proficiency in reading and understanding technical drawings and specifications.
- Possess a working knowledge of the practices and procedures pertaining to technical matters in electric distribution design.
- Upon offer, employees may be required to subject and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Travel is primarily through the greater San Diego area to the client and project during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
