Description of Work

Engineering Content Management (ECM) is essential to the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT), ensuring the efficiency and accuracy of applications and processes that support transportation operations. The ECM Construction Team plays a pivotal role in the DOT Transportation Lifecycle by maintaining and enhancing the systems and tools used across various business units. Through innovative content management solutions, ECM supports the department's mission to connect people, products, and places safely and efficiently.

This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in content management and application support within a collaborative and fast-paced environment. Interns will work closely with the ECM Construction Team, contributing to tasks such as updating application support documentation, managing business support tickets through ServiceNow, and participating in design and development meetings with developers in web systems.

NCDOT is committed to inspiring and cultivating the next generation of ECM professionals by equipping interns with valuable knowledge and skills. Throughout the internship, participants will build expertise in SharePoint/Web Application design, time management, and project management. By the end of the internship, interns will have developed a comprehensive understanding of the ECM Construction Team's role in supporting NCDOT's transportation lifecycle and delivering impactful solutions to enhance operational success.

Internship Structure for Transportation Engineering Content Management (ECM) Role:

Overview: This 10-week internship (May 27-August 1, 2025) offers a focused and immersive experience in NCDIT's Transportation Engineering Content Management (ECM) Department, which plays a critical role in supporting the mission of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT): Connecting people, products, and places safely and efficiently with customer focus, accountability, and environmental sensitivity to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina. Interns will gain practical skills in content management, application support, and web design while learning how the ECM Construction Team supports NCDOT's mission by enhancing applications and providing innovative solutions for transportation operations.

NCDOT's ECM Team is committed to innovation, collaboration, and excellence in supporting the department's transportation lifecycle. Interns will be empowered to contribute to these goals by working collaboratively with the team and gaining a solid foundation in content management, application support, and web design strategies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The intern will perform a blend of administrative and technical tasks, supporting the ECM Construction Team in providing innovative solutions for NCDOT. Responsibilities include:

Application Support and Documentation
  • Update application support and design documentation to ensure accuracy and usability.
  • Respond to ServiceNow business support tickets, troubleshooting issues and providing timely resolutions.
  • Collaborate with team members to maintain and improve application help resources.
Application Design and Change Management
  • Assist in creating and validating change orders for existing applications.
  • Participate in design calls and discussions with developers and web systems teams to enhance application functionality.
  • Contribute to the development and testing of application updates, ensuring they meet user needs and business objectives.
Team Collaboration and Learning
  • Engage in regular team meetings and discussions to better understand ECM Construction's role in the NCDOT Transportation Lifecycle.
  • Build technical expertise by learning the applications and platforms being supported.
  • Develop time management, project management, and SharePoint/web application design skills through hands-on projects and guidance from the team.
Preferences for Candidates:
  • Education Level:
    Enrolled in or recently graduated from a college-level program.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
    • Experience with SharePoint applications or websites.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills to assess and improve processes.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Experience with web design or application design outside of SharePoint.
    • Familiarity with ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.
  • Attributes:
    • Interest in transportation engineering and content management.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
