Kentucky Educational Television, (KET) has the following full-time position opening at its Lexington, Kentucky Network Center:
Used by more than two million people each week, KET is Kentucky’s only statewide media organization, and broadcasts into 8 states and 10 media markets, along with providing live and archived streaming services. In addition to offering high-quality PBS programming, KET annually produces hundreds of hours of award-winning local productions and creates nationally recognized educational resources.
This is a unique opportunity to work with an outstanding, respected, and trusted journalistic team, and to contribute to a wide variety of public affairs productions, including Kentucky’s only nightly statewide news program, General Assembly coverage, three weekly series, election and candidate coverage, and ongoing forums and special programs.
As host, moderator, and/or reporter, you will be helping to provide context and connecting with viewers, providing important information, covering wide-ranging topics and engaging with guests to help facilitate discussions offering diverse perspectives on topics that matter to the people and communities we serve.
This position is based at KET’s Network Center in Lexington and also works at KET’s Capitol Bureau in Frankfort and the KET Louisville Production Center. KET’s facilities are located in beautiful “horse country” with a thriving community that offers affordable living, outstanding educational opportunities, and world class sporting events. Our ideal Candidate will:
Serve as on-air host, moderator, reporter, and/or producer for productions focused on public policy, community interests, political issues, legislative coverage, and current events.
Have a passion for public affairs and great appreciation for public discourse.
Practice strong journalistic skills and ethical standards and ensure accuracy in their work.
Be articulate and skilled at communications, writing scripts, interviewing guests, utilizing prompter, and ad-libbing as necessary.
Oversee, coordinate, and execute all content and production elements for short-form and long-form public affairs productions.
Perform all related activities, including creating budgets, facilities and crew requests, production notes, cue sheets, release forms, rights and contracts, and graphics inventory, as well as organizing and archiving video content, and the maintenance of records and reports.
Manage content distribution across multiple platforms, strengthen digital capacity, and integrate digital production into daily workflow.
Contribute to and execute the creative and editorial vision of KET productions.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the organization.
Successful applicants will have the following minimum qualifications, skills, and experience:
Bachelor’s degree in related field plus three (3) years of broadcast and digital journalism production experience preferred. Practical experience in television may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
Journalism reporting, experience and skills, including understanding of editorial standards of accuracy, thoroughness, ethics, and balance required.
Strong writing, content editing, and proofreading abilities, including knowledge of AP style are required.
Experience with professional cameras and proficiency in editing and directing online non-linear finish edit sessions are preferred.
Knowledge and interest in government, Kentucky politics, history and culture is preferred.
Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in an environment of multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines is required.
Must have strong computer, writing, oral communications, and interpersonal skills.
Must be available on a flexible schedule and for weekend and overnight travel and maintain a valid driver’s license to drive KET vehicles.
Must be able to carry production equipment (up to 40lbs).
Must maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
