Position Summary
With a strong service orientation, the Electronic Resources and Technical Services Librarian will manage library electronic resources, serials, and periodicals, participate in reference and instruction services, and serve as Library Catalog Manager. As a small University, cataloging duties will be minimal, and we usually have less than twenty honors theses submitted to OhioLINK's ETD system each academic year. Please be aware that ODU is currently migrating our ILS to Alma with the guidance and support of OPAL and OhioLINK, so the duties outlined below will likely change with that migration.
Essential Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesManagement of Electronic Resources, Serials, and Periodicals
- Manages and maintains the interlibrary loan system, Tipasa.
- Completes ILL borrowing and lending daily.
- Manages the library's research databases by ensuring links are current, access is available, and search/location results are accurate. Troubleshoots with vendors and other library staff.
- Updates and communicates with staff on resource changes, additions, or problems.
- Manages and maintains the serials module of the library's Innovative Interfaces system.
- Supervises the creation and maintenance of serials check-in records.
- Resolves serial record conflicts and problems with the subscription agent.
- Develops policies and procedures for electronic resources, serials, and periodicals collection.
- Monitors use counts for reports and recommends subscription modifications.
- Initiates, oversees, and manages special projects related to electronic resources, serials, and periodicals.
Catalog Management
- Using the Dewey Decimal Classification system, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, copies catalog library materials in machine-readable format (MARC) utilizing OCLC Connexion and an Innovative Interfaces library automation system.
- Creates order records for new acquisitions.
- Supervises student workers in processing new and withdrawn materials and covers these duties when a student worker is not available.
- Conducts ongoing catalog database clean-up of fields and codes in the ILS so that our system works well within the OPAL and OhioLINK central catalogs.
- Repairs damaged library materials.
- Uploads theses to OhioLINK's ETD system at semester's end.
- Creates, updates, and oversees digital accessibility standards for ETDs at ODU.
- Assists patrons with research needs, remotely (via phone, chat, and e-mail) and in-person.
- Conducts in-depth research appointments with patrons.
- Participates in the library's Information Literacy efforts, in collaboration with faculty, by providing streamlined and interactive research instruction sessions in first-year English courses.
- Provides additional library and research instruction in class settings and assists in creating and providing online research help, as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel)
- Current web interfaces and search engines
- Some knowledge of AI preferred
Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
- 2 years of experience in an academic library.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with students, university community, and learning center staff.
- Good knowledge of principles and practices of assigned areas.
- Ability to react appropriately with multiple types of patrons and situations, including emergencies.
- Computer experience with programs necessary to complete requirements of duties.
- Capability to work on team projects and to lead team meetings.
- Able to utilize active listening skills to ascertain areas of need, define problems, and determine possible solutions to meet expressed needs.
- Demonstrate leadership, tact, diplomacy, professionalism, and a positive demeanor in performance of all duties.
Physical Demands
- Routine physical demands for an office environment.
- Frequent standing or walking.
- Sitting at a desk or in meetings for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift/move up to 25lbs.
- Operate all computer equipment, copier, printer, telephone, calculator, etc.
