Descript
Descript is hiring: Video Producer in San Francisco
Descript, San Francisco, CA, United States, 94175
Job description
At Descript, we're on a mission to make communicating by video as easy as writing an email. We're looking for a meticulous, creative Video producer to join our team.
We want someone to set a video strategy and define a creative vision for video content that helps drive Descript's growth, burnish our brand, inspire and educate our users. Then lead our video team in executing that vision. Someone who can produce video, and a lot of it, that makes viewers think things like "so helpful," "so smart," "so honest," and "such a refreshing break from the usual stuff I see on the internet."
You know every stage of video production; you're as comfortable doing it yourself as you are leading a smooth, efficient process with a team. You know what's good and you enforce your high standards by inspiring a team to do their best work, never settle, and find creative solutions when problems arise.
What you'll do
The base salary range for this role is $155,000-180,000. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including experience, expertise, and location, and they may vary from the amount above.
About Descript
Descript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio - an editing tool built for the age of AI. We are a team of 150 - with a proven CEO and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital).
Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.
Benefits include a generous healthcare package, catered lunches, and flexible vacation time. Our headquarters are located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. We're looking to hire people who are local and able to join us at the office when needed. We're flexible, and you're an adult-we don't expect or mandate that you're in the office every day. But we do believe there are valuable and serendipitous moments of discovery and collaboration that come from working together in person.
Descript is an equal opportunity workplace-we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We believe in actively building a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions to better allow our employees, products, and community to thrive.

What you'll do
- Set a video strategy that describes how video supports our users, burnishes our brand, and fuels our growth; it defines success in both measurable and subjective terms across all our surfaces and channel; and it sets a clear direction for serial video content.
- Understand our audience (creators of video or podcasts, at work or at home) so intimately that you'll be able to make fast, intuitive decisions about how our video can best serve them and get their attention. You'll use channel performance and other types of insight to continuously develop that understanding
- Define and develop a distinctive video brand voice. It will be complementary to and consistent with Descript's copywriting voice. It will prioritize clarity and honesty, and allow for surprise and subversion.
- Make a lot of video. You'll collaborate with other teams to to precisely define the video we want to make. Then you'll make it. You'll direct production, performance, and editing work-doing it yourself and delegating as appropriate-to deliver high-quality content aligned to channel goals.
- Lead a video team in executing our video strategy. Define the resources we need and make sure we have them. Ensure the team understands the strategy and knows exactly what they need to do to deliver on it. Help them continuously learn, grow, and get better. And help them cut through complexity and solve thorny problems with creativity, collaboration, and grace.
- Represent video as a discipline. Keep your finger on the pulse of what's happening in a medium that's changing incredibly fast, and continuously suggest and execute ideas for keeping Descript's video fresh and distinctive (but never reactive or on-trend). Capture and quantify the impact of video.
- Collaborate across teams. Work closely with Content, Product Marketing, Growth, Lifecycle, and Community teams on broader marketing goals. Collaborate regularly with Product, Design, and company leadership.
- Production experience: 10+ years of experience in video production; ability to conceive of, articulate, and execute video ideas from start to finish.
- Leadership experience: 3+ years of experience leading a team, with a thoughtful, empathetic approach to helping team members make their best work.
- Creative vision: A demonstrated ability to develop distinctive video content that informs and engages audiences, sparks their admiration, and sticks in their consciousness. Ability to generate a lot of ideas, all the time.
- Creative skill: Total mastery of video editing. A sharp eye for detail and demonstrably good taste that's been honed over years of creative work (at work and otherwise).
- Technical skill: Total command of editing tools and most other aspects of post-production. Able to lead and execute videography, lighting, and other aspects of a video shoot.
- Online video know-how: deep understanding of the online video space. That includes experience with the major platforms (e.g., YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and so on). You know their respective audiences, algorithms, and metrics, and the best ways to engage on each platform.
