SUMMARY

The managing editor is responsible for administration of the editorial and production process of Internal Auditor magazine and InternalAuditor.org. Proven project management skills, knowledge of AP style, strong writing and editing skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously are essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees work of editors, ensuring consistency in quality, tone, and alignment with content strategies.
  • Manages the day-to-day editorial process.
  • Recruits writers, both freelance and volunteer, and cultivates relationships.
  • Works with authors on enhancements to their submissions and makes specific suggestions for rewrites.
  • Creates production schedule for both Internal Auditor and InternalAuditor.org and tracks progress to ensure internal compliance.
  • Develops the editorial lineup for each issue based on the annual Editorial Calendar.
  • Writes, edits, copy fits, and proofs features and departments for Internal Auditor magazine and InternalAuditor.org.
  • Solicits, edits, and manages exclusive articles for InternalAuditor.org.
  • Manages and coordinates content ideas, SMEs, and production for magazine-related videos and podcasts.
  • Creates imposition for each digital issue.
  • Ensures quality and deadline expectations are met in all production areas, including correcting or adjusting layouts.

  • Oversees graphic design in collaboration with the Editor in Chief; coordinates with designer and digital platform provider; ensures that layout and graphics are consistent with editorial style and message.
  • Supports the Sales Department’s efforts by providing advance editorial information to facilitate advertising sales.
  • Works with Marketing’s production/traffic manager to coordinate printing/postage for any print issues of magazine.
  • Keeps abreast of professional issues and develops ideas regarding editorial content.
  • Attends IIA functions, conferences, and seminars as necessary to report from and network with members, find leads, and possible authors.
  • Supports and drives innovation of content delivery to drive engagement by staying on top of leading publishing trends, content engagement, content management, AI, automation, social, and design.
  • Assists Editor in Chief with special projects as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Journalism or English; or eight to ten years related experience and/or training in magazine or newspaper publishing, nonfiction, business writing, copyediting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with an international organization is an asset to any role within The IIA.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Multiple language skill is an asset to any role within The IIA.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with InDesign and other Creative Suite products is necessary as well as Microsoft Office products and Web content management and analytics tools. Some knowledge of HTML is also required. Intermediate or higher ability to work in a computerized environment.
