Job Summary/General Purpose of Job
- Principal job within the Sections responsible for recruitment and retention of Section members, the growth of revenue, dues and non-dues revenue, and the creation and enhancement of member benefits that enhances the membership value proposition of both ABA and Section membership. Responsible for the development and implementation of overall communications, marketing, and business development strategy, execution, and analysis; oversees messaging, branding, website, media relations, social media, direct mail, membership materials, analytics, and sponsorship.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Oversees development and execution of initiatives designed to increase membership recruitment and retention and drive dues revenue.
- Oversees development and execution of strategic and comprehensive sponsorship plan to drive non-dues revenue.
- Oversees the development and execution of product marketing initiatives, including but not limited to meetings, CLE, webinars, and other Section content.
- Functions as the substantive expert with the Section Officers to ensure alignment of membership/marketing goals and objectives to ensure consistency of messaging and timeliness of communications.
- Provides strategic direction and primary support to relevant governance boards and administrative committees who oversee all Section membership, marketing, sponsorship efforts of the Section.
- Creates, tests, deploys, and tracks the effectiveness of marketing plans, programs, conversion rates, and similar metrics which validate both the spend and recruitment/retention of new members.
- Conducts or directs others in the development of research targeted at driving the participation of member groups; early-career lawyer, academics, government and public service lawyers, women, lawyers of color, international lawyers and corporate counsel.
- Determines return on investment and internal rates of return on revenue expended to attract, retain, and expand Section membership and, where appropriate, institutes programmatic and marketing changes to address needs.
- Develops, leads and executes all marketing efforts of all Section and Committee meetings that provide content to Section members and potential members and reinforces the benefits of Section members.
- Provides leadership, direction, coaching, counseling, performance feedback, and, where appropriate, discipline to an assigned staff.
- Develops all membership and marketing related communications to promote all Section programs, projects and initiatives across all marketing channels. Ensures that such materials are aligned with ABA branding standards and do not conflict with other ABA messaging/timing.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Education, Qualifications, Experience
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least five years’ experience leading membership and marketing activities for a not-for-profit entity.
- At least five years’ experience leading and accomplishing profitable membership growth in a member supported entity.
Preferred Education, Qualifications, Experience
- Previous experience working in an environment dealing with tax laws, regulations, and litigation.
Physical Requirements
- Typical office work environment.
Extent of Travel Required in the Job
- As a normal course of business, this job will typically require travel of less than 10% of the time.
