OVERVIEW:
The Grant Writer, under the direction of the Planning Director, will be responsible for applying and securing funding for tribal programs with an acceptable rate of success. This will require searching available funding sources, keeping apprised of new and cyclical funding availability, and working with appropriate staff to complete and submit funding requests and proposals in a timely manner. Areas of tribal growth include, but are not limited to; recreation, culture and historical preservation, health, public health and social services, education, natural resources and Justice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Per the Grant Submission guidelines, will coordinate with tribal department directors and staff to identify, develop and submit grants to support proposed projects and programs that are priorities to the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe (LEKT). Researches, interprets relevant regulations and grant guidelines to coordinate the process of developing a project to submit a grant application for funding purposes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, this position is Indian Preference in hiring in Accordance with P.L. 93- 638.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Per the Grant Submission guidelines, will coordinate with tribal department directors and staff to identify, develop and submit grants to support proposed projects and programs that are priorities to the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe (LEKT). Researches, interprets relevant regulations and grant guidelines to coordinate the process of developing a project to submit a grant application for funding purposes.
- Identify potential grant sources for various program areas per LEKT priorities; will also involve research for various programs including analyzing data and evidence based programs
- Keep documentation/log of potential funders, agencies and foundations when conducting research for grant opportunities.
- Develop, edit and draft grant applications for accuracy, completeness and clarity in accordance with grant request for proposals and/or funding announcements.
- Provide copy of all grant proposals to the tribal grant administrator/comptroller, CFO and project manager, department director and tribal council executive secretary.
- Work with planning staff to expand and compile reference materials as needed.
- Provide assistance when needed to other planning staff working on various projects. .
- Disseminate information in a timely manner on funding opportunities to tribal department directors and coordinate the proposal planning process if need be.
- Assist with the management of paperless (electronic) files of all grant application on tribal network.
- Prepare the all documents in accordance with the LEKT Grant Submission guidelines includes tribal resolution and tribal council approval process.
- Be available when needed to provide assistance in resolving issues and conflicts with funding agencies if not resolvable by the project director.
- Assist with all other planning department functions such as meeting with tribal programs to help resolve funding issues, strategic planning, comprehensive planning and community meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Extensive knowledge of grant writing, grant processes and practices for application submittal.
- Knowledge of Grants.gov, JustGrants and any other grant portals and have ability to submit grant electronically.
- Knowledge of federal and state financial support for tribal government programs.
- Knowledge of private foundation sources for tribal programs.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to interact with granting agencies for submittal and management of grants.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines for grant opportunities.
- Ability to participate as a team player to develop and coordinate grant projects.
- Ability to interpret and apply granting agencies rules and regulations.
- Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects.
- High level of ability in word processing, excel spreadsheets and data bases.
- Ability to work independently and complete tasks on time.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Prefer a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; will consider an AA degree with qualifying respective writing skills and experience
- Experience working with Indian tribes in fundraising activities preferred.
- Minimum three years related experience in grant writing and management.
- Ability to establish good working relationship with funding agencies, foundations, tribal members, tribal program directors/managers and the tribal Business Committee.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe's Drug Free Workplace policies and personnel policies.
