A Day in the Life of a Project Planner or Senior Planner

As a Project Planner or Senior Planner, you manage tasks, projects, and community engagement, work directly with our clients, represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings, pursue and win work, and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. You work with other planners, landscape architects, urban designers, and engineers to deliver a variety of exciting project types focused on making places and travel experiences better for everyone. You are at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, integrating input from a broad range of stakeholders to create award-winning plans that lead directly to implementation.

We help clients find people-first solutions that prioritize active transportation at all different scales: national, state, regional, local, corridor, and intersections and crossings. Our work includes community network plans, safety analyses and Vision Zero action plans, Safe Routes to School plans and program management, design guidelines, conceptual design, and wayfinding. Underpinning our work is our unwavering commitment to human-centric streets and places that exemplify equity, ethics, and empathy.

For Project Planner candidates, who typically have 6-9 years of experience, we are targeting a salary range of $75,000-$90,000. For Senior Planner candidates, with 10+ years' experience, we are targeting a salary range of $86,000-$102,000.

Qualifications of a Project Planner or Senior Planner:

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in a related field or additional work experience in lieu of secondary education
  • At least 6 years of active transportation, planning, urban design, or other related experience
  • Strong writing skills and experience working as a support and/or primary author for planning or technical documents
  • Relevant work experience in one or more of the following areas: active transportation planning, multimodal corridor studies, streetscape design, and/or conducting public outreach and engagement
  • Knowledge of safety planning, Vision Zero, the Safe System Approach, proven safety countermeasures, crash modification factors, high-injury networks, safety performance functions, and the Highway Safety Manual is a plus
  • Successful track record working independently on completing and/or managing tasks
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and multi-phased projects
  • Motivation to win work for a growing office including forming and managing client relationships, identifying potential opportunities, and developing proposals and interview materials
  • Software proficiency
    • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • GIS software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS)
  • Certification as an AICP is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) is a plus
  • Communication skills
    • Strong written and verbal communication
    • Spanish language abilities are a plus

Work Schedule for a Project Planner or Senior Planner

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2 days per week. The Madison office of Toole Design is conveniently located just off the Capitol Square, one block from State Street's bike friendly transit corridor and easily accessible by the Metro Transit bus system. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
