Summary
As a TK-8 music teacher at the Parish School, the elements of music will be taught via the content standards as set forth by the Diocese of San Diego and the California State Standards. An appreciation of the art of music will be developed in each student to include:
- Artistic Perception – Teach students to read, write, and listen to and describe music
- Creative Expression – Train students to sing a repertoire of vocal literature representing various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, good posture, and tone quality
- Historical and Cultural Context – Teach students to understand and analyze the historical and cultural roots of music
- Music Appreciation – Aid students in deriving meaning from, and responding to, various works of music
The music teacher is responsible for leading the congregational singing and providing instrumental accompaniment at assigned weekend Masses. This role requires the ability to work in a Catholic environment of kindness, compassion, respect, integrity, mutual charity, and dignity. The musician must work collegially with other ministers in providing a music program that supports a dynamic and inspiring worship community reflective of the core values of the Catholic Church and Saint Pius X Catholic Parish.

Teaching Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver music instruction for students TK-8, creating lesson plans by utilizing repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the various ages, grade levels, and skill levels of students according to developmental ability.
- Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music
- Lead and direct school choir and/or musicians
- Prepare students for school liturgies once a month on weekends and be present for those Masses
- Prepare students for weekday weekly school liturgies and provide the music for those Masses
- Plan, coordinate, rehearse, and conduct musical performances such as the Advent Program, Grandparents Day, Lenten Stations of the Cross, May Crowning, and any other musical events in which students are expected to perform as representatives of the school
- Establish and maintain standards of productive and respectful classroom management that are aligned with Catholic values
- Establish a positive, encouraging rapport with students that honors all ability levels
- Assess and drive student growth through formative and summative assessments
- Communicate effectively with parents
- Provide sacred music at special liturgies as needed, such as Holy Days of Obligation
- Invite, encourage, and enhance assembly participation in the sacred music
- Ensure ongoing expansion of the school’s music repertoire
- Collaborate with the pastor and parish’s liturgy coordinator in the selection of appropriate liturgical music for Masses
- Ensure that the parish musical instruments and audio equipment are maintained, repaired, tuned, and operational as needed
- Certify that all liturgical musicians and choir members are well-versed in the liturgy of the Church and the propriety of their duties, including an understanding of the rubrics of the Church
- Attain copyright permission for music as necessary
- Provide musical input and copyright information for the preparation of worship aids
- Other duties as assigned
Hours:
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8am - 2:30
- Thursdays 7:15am (due to morning choir) until 2:30 or 3pm
Religious Qualifications:
- Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
- Basic Catechetical Certification (preferred)
- Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
Professional Qualifications:
- Possess a cleared California multiple subject teaching credential (preferred)
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree
- Clear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment)
- Experience teaching in an elementary school classroom
- Positive professional references and recommendation
- Demonstrable skill leading the congregation in prayerful participation in the liturgy
- Effective in directing amateur musicians and vocalists as needed
- Ability to “sight read” music
- Singing voice appropriate for teaching choir
- Proficiency in playing at least one musical instrument
- Knowledge of sacred and secular music
- Ability to communicate musical concepts effectively
- Friendly with excellent people and communication skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Ability to follow and take directions from a supervisor
- A faithful member of a Catholic parish community
- Ability to sing in English, Spanish, and/or Tagalog a plus
Physical Requirements:
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:
- Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
- Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
- Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
- Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
- Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
- Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
