Purpose of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to perform part-time paraprofessional library work under direct supervision of a Librarian, which includes circulation activities, operating the on-line circulation system, library technical processing and data-entry, assists with makerspace/digital/virtual reality programming, shelving library materials, collection shelf-reading, setting up tables, chairs, screens for meetings and clerical tasks. Duties require some expertise and some independent judgment.

Essential Functions

The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned. Customer Relations Library Aide performs the following tasks:

Operates computerized online circulation system; conducts collection and patron database transactions; applies State Statutes regarding confidentiality of Library Records.

Interprets and applies policies and procedures to public.

Responds to incoming telephone calls, satisfies patron needs or directs to appropriate staff member.

Performs cash handling/cash collection duties.

Assists patrons in the use of the library.

Assists patrons with the self-check in machines.

Performs customer greeter functions.

Assists patrons with electronic items available for checkout such as laptops.

Assists with makerspace/digital/virtual reality programming.

Shelves books, videos, and stray library materials; straightens books on shelves; ensures books are in correct order on shelves; shelves special collections and videos; shifts or relocates parts of the library collection.

Files ephemeral materials.

Assembles and sets up tables, chairs and other furniture and equipment for city activities, meetings, luncheons, classes and other events as needed; picks up and delivers chairs and tables; disassembles and stores items after meeting has convened.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of various areas throughout the Library.

Performs shelf-reading tasks.

Reviews all library offerings to provide public with available services.

Assists in processing item holds, customer Interlibrary Loan's (ILLs), courier items, items checked out and returned, magazines, new items, and removed items.

Assists with book displays and Radio-Frequency Identification RFID tasks.

Creates customer records and assists in maintaining the customer database.

Provides limited Readers Advisory.

Collects data and prepares reports as requested by supervisor.

Processes and prepares book and non-book materials for circulation, including but not limited to, inserting theft detection targets, attaching book labels, and book covers; laminating paperback books; uses computer; uses postage meter; uses laminating machine.

Library Assistant - Administration performs the following duties:

Supports Accounting Technician by performing accounts payables and receivables duties, counts cash; makes monetary deposits at City Hall.

Answers telephones, makes copies, sorts mail, faxes documents.

Processes library periodicals.

Performs routine typing, data entry and report preparation using Word Processing,

Excel spreadsheets and other data management software.

Assists with preparing payroll.

Gathers and maintains data for reports, as required by administration, the State Library, and national organizations.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs closing procedure and secures the building. Performs other related duties as required.

Library Assistant - Creative Edge Studio performs the following duties:

Assists librarian in charge of the Creative Edge Studio by assisting with the duties of performing a successful program to the public.

Performs one on one patron appointments. Assists patrons in the training and use of equipment.

Responds to incoming telephone calls, satisfies patron needs or directs to appropriate staff member.

Assists patrons in the use of the library.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or valid equivalent; and
  • Knowledge of Dewey classification and alphabetical shelving.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications for education and experience must be met before consideration of the following Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous public library experience.
  • Possess six (6) months of customer service experience.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability to learn/perform a variety of work activities with the assigned Department/Division.
